Dump Valve
« on: January 04, 2010, 12:52:12 PM »
Hello folks!
not been on here for a while, i've been driving around  ;D
Hope everyone has had a good new year  :thumb:

just a quick question if anyone knows if anyone has fitted a dump valve to the abarth 500?
i've had a search around but not got any clear answers so i'm sorry if this is re-post-y.

love the car so much but my inner boy racer would love the noise to finish it off!

Thanks
Dan

I think its like the Grande Punto: it already has a dumpvalve! All you need is to disconnect the rubberpipe that leads the dumpvalveblowoffair back to the airintake, plug that side off (otherwise unfiltered air gets into turbo/engine) and ready. For optics you can put an open little airfilter for a few quid on top of the dumpvalve opening ;).

Time: 5-10min
Costs: 5-30 quid (depends on and if you put a filter on top of it).

Check this thread for more info: http://www.abarthforum.co.uk/500-abarth-tuning/after-market-mods-worthwhile-or-not/

would the forge motorsport dump valve mentioned in that thread suit the abarth?

have you done this? i'm vary wary of doing anything on my own as a mistake with the turbo could damage the engine couldn't it?

cheers guys

Here it is in my car. Its a Abarth Grande Punto, but shouldn´t be much different on a Abarth 500.

Nothing needs to be changed on the dumpvalve itsself! It just blows the air out of the little airfilter. The sound is louder without the filter (but i like it this way, looks nicer!). Also i remove the "isolation" of the bonnet when it doesn´t freeze: you can hear it better ;). (when it freeze i like the engine gets faster on temp so i put the isolation back. But normaly it also cools better the engine room without the isolation (feel the bonnet in the middle and sides, its a real difference in temp!)).

can't edit my post for some reason...
is this a complete no-no for keeping warranty or is it possible to put everything as it was before a service, or would they be able to tell that its been fiddled with?

I know the A500 uses a recirculated DV (as did my old Punto GT) and I used the Forge 'Splitter' DV on that without any probs, so in theory it should work on the Abarth. Might treat myself to one and give it a go!

Yep  :thumb: the Forge 'Splitter' DV is great, its not stupidly loud, but just enough to make you smile and be heard!

Because first i got another dumpvalve from the dealer, but he found out the GPA had already 1. The did this. But everybody can do it by themselves. Also 5 min work to get it all back in place! I have the rubber bend pipe somewhere in the backtrunk. They first put the filter on the bend, but that wasn´t so good. No problem with warranty! It makes sound, and for me it makes the turbolag a bit less imo. The airrecirculation makes stops the sucking of air i think (turbo doens´t suck air, but still there is more air in front of the turbo due to the dumpvalve, so it goes backwards to the filter, or at least it stopt the proper flow of air in 1 direction), now the air keeps flowing in 1 direction. Try it out, and post your findings ;).

To be honest you don't need to go through all that. The Forge 'Splitter' DV as I mentioned above will just replace the standard Fiat DV. It recirculates the air flow as well as giving the 'blow off' sound. You have to be careful what DV you get as the air flow is metered on modern cars, if its the wrong DV it could play havoc with the car.

The Forge Splitter sounds like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jLlJ1uSWEaA&feature=related

I like it, its not too loud, but loud enough to make you smile! I know, I'm sad  :-[ lol
