Review of my Mods
« on: February 01, 2012, 04:07:15 AM »
Hi all,

review of my mods on my car:

16" Compomotives MO1630: I like the look of these but ordered it in 7JX16" instead of the factory 6.5J so it rubs against the inner fenders on full lock uphill especially with my 195/50 tyres

Yokohama A048 LTS: Great tyres, size is 195/50/16 which just about fits the car, these are front race compound tyres as fitted to the lotus exige

Scorpion Exhaust System: I was surprised there was hardly any torque lost after installing this system bought from the forge website, however, the sound is absolutely weak and is only marginally louder than the original, I would have to advise against it.

Forge BOV and Actuator: BOV makes the car sound more fun and the actuator seems to increase the boost slightly (adjusted conservatively) and reduces lag, boost seem to hold better on full throttle with this setup.

GTT Induction: Noticeable power gains and induction noise! again surprised and pleased to report that not much torque was lost low down in the rev range.

Quaife LSD: expensive but changes the way the car drives around corners much more sure footed after installing and counters that so terrifying wiggle the car sometimes had mid corner, works well too with the TTC setting.

TMC Box: made my standard 500 on par with the SS, much crisper turbo response and generally the most satisfying mod to have for money's worth

Bilstein coilovers: mine are the cheaper set which cannot be adjustable for firmness, I think that they are pretty good but ride quality is pretty poor on these. I would imagine the Konis would be much more comfortable to live with everyday.

my next planned mods are: brakes and some chassis strengthening braces!

Thanks,

8200

Very interested to hear your opinions on fitting your actuator.

1. Did you have it fitted before or after your TMC? as Daron said he had fitted one on a standard car and put it into limp mode due to the change of boost

2. Has you can ever fallen into limp mode?

3. (I know the TMC alters the true reading but...) What does your boost gauge show on full throttle?

Cheers :D

048s only done 2000kms or so, but they do wear out quick as they are Medium Compound Tyres but with the LSD the car just grips, fuel consumption was increased after these tyres went on though, probably due to the fact that they have more resistance to the road

1. Did you have it fitted before or after your TMC? as Daron said he had fitted one on a standard car and put it into limp mode due to the change of boost Fitted actuator after TMC, but i have disabled the TMC twice and driven the car on the slightly increased boost setting, no limp mode problems yet

2. Has you can ever fallen into limp mode? not yet, i am pleased to say

3. (I know the TMC alters the true reading but...) What does your boost gauge show on full throttle? 1.2to 1.3maxup to the shift up lamp blinking

Thanks for the heads up on the scorpion exhaust. I have had 2 scorpions on cars that i have owned. The first scorpion ws on a RS Turbos series 2 and i was over the moon with that exhaust could not fault it for sound looks and build, however i got one for my subaru once and everything changed the build quality and sound were both poor. I was still considering to get one for our A500 but i don't think i will now. Think i will stick to what most of guys on here fit and thats the miltek

Great right up Thanks :thumb:

If your considering a change of exhaust and are lookin at cat back systems then Id really consider the BTB system, the one Ive seen on Tonys car looked A-Mazing quality and sound just as good as it looks, search BTB on here and also try n find the youtube clip Mr_Dog recorded of one doing drive pasts, if I hadnt been so set on gettin the G-Tech system I think I would have strongly considered the BTB.

Personally I dont like the note the Milltek gives but thats just imo

limp mode is where the ecu goes into safety mode and cuts power. but this only happens if you turn the box up to setting 8 or 9 . so nothing to worry about if you just keep it on the tried and tested setting 6  :thumb:

Sorry my fault I was talking about an actuator upping the boost and putting the car in limp mode, didnt mean TMC would. My bad

But the above post explains the issue with the settings on the box, follow that advice.and your be fine

The issue we had with the actuator was a long time ago and tested on a standard car (no TMC box), given that the TMC box allows higher boost pressure it should work with the stronger actuator, remember what you are trying to do is not get even higher boost than with the TMC box but rather holding a level of boost for longer, I have very limited access to A500's here in Ireland but I would love to test the actuator on one. I feel pretty confident having heard of others with them fitted and working fine that I'd be fairly sure it will work. I might look at offering a TMC box, induction and actuator package, the difficulty with the actuators is setting them up, you need to know what your doing and be measuring boost off the inlet manifold for accurate readings, I figure if you can get the car to hold 1.2bar boost it should be hitting around 180bhp and using an induction kit and free flowing exhaust and sports cat will make for a really nice power delivery.

Well, thats one of the reasons I wanted a secondary boost gauge taking its reading off the manifold. Hmmm its quite abit to consider and weigh up so Im gona take my time and make sure I make the right dession about where I take the car :thumb:

LSD was bought direct from quaife online at ex Vat price and shipped out to hong kong where I am based so I guess not much help on the fitting side.

However it's quite hard to fit as the original diff is under all the gears and most things in the box had to come out before hand.

A problem I had after fitting was a little part of the gear selector was not put back properly and the car could not select 2nd 4th or reversed an was stuck in 1st gear even when the know was moved to the neutral position, this was rectified and have had no problem ever since.
