Wheel alignment out or is it ?
« on: January 29, 2012, 07:56:13 PM »
Hi all,
I'm after your opinions please
I got two new front tyres replaced this weekend and chose a local garage to put them on. As the tyres had worn quite badly on the inside I asked them to do the tracking too. Before hand the car never pulled to one side or the other and the steering wheel centralised.
They have done a 4 wheel alignment but now the car pulls to the left and the steering wheel is miles out. I've rang them so they having another look at this. The guy told me it is probably a steering arm bent.
I'm not happy though because since I got home I noticed two marks on my alloys now too! And a dirty steering wheel ! :thumbd:

What do you guys think it could be ? Please say bad workmanship and nothing serious  :'(

Bent steering arm? doesnt sound like they know what they are doing.
Take it to somewhere more specialist, some one who races perhaps.
A friend of mine does ours the old way with fishing line, its spot on.

There is a chap in Accrington I've used in the past. He's great.

Sounds like they have screwed it up.

But - check the tyre pressures. I have never found them to be correct when a tyre place has switched my wheels.  :thumb:
He's here, he's here, he's here....... :-)

yeah, sounds like they didnt have a clue, have mine checked appx 6000mls, normally ok , takes alot to alter the goemetry, hit a large pot hole felt like a bomb exploding in the car ! , had it checked ....... just slightly off, done at elite in rainham essex on a hilka rig and theyre pretty good guys to have it done with. kerb impact sideways is more likely to knock it out , rather than up/down .... ok , potholes can do tyre wall/ rim damage on low profiles. i always look before/after when having tracking/tyres fitted , for any "new" damage. hope you get it sorted !

Update guys
Took the car back in yesterday morning. The mechanic took it out to see how bad it was. Had it in the workshop for about an hour , test drove again, all seems to be now ok. The guy said he couldn't understand how they got it so wrong the first time. Bit annoyed though about the marked alloys but they deny it all. I had a go but ended up giving in as I can't prove it. Overall not a good experience but I leant one thing.
Never to go back !  :thumbd:

No i never paid the second time, feel like they ripped me off anyway  ???

The mark on the wheels are strange. its as if there is a film that is peeled off slightly about 20mm x 20m, when i give the car a good clean il get a better look at it, damn weather

then again, this could be an excuse to get some new alloys altogether  :P
just to convince the other half its cheaper to get a whole set rather than sort the two marks out

Just buy them and do what the womenfolk do " those shoes have been in the wardrobe for ages but I've only just got round to putting them on!"  just substitute shoes for wheels and wardrobe for garage!

Indeed, just change the wheels, will your missus notice, I went from APE claw to white SS wheels, it wasn't noticed, it's a bit like when she gets a haircut/new shoes, I've not got a clue until she's standing in front of me asking if I notice something different about her, at that point I know something is up, but is it one of those trick questions, could it be her figure, hair, shoes etc......out with the magic 8 ball, there's a 12.5% chance of success  ;D

Another idea, take her out for dinner the night before you plan on swapping on the new wheels, get her crazy drunk, then if she notices the wheels changing just say they were always like that and its probably just from being so drunk she dreamt up a new set in her stupor, success rate of that working is above 80%
