Clutch Pedal Snapped 3 Times
« on: August 25, 2010, 08:57:28 PM »
Hi all,

Most of you are probably aware of the issues I've had with my clutch pedal. It snapped the first time last August and snapped yet again around 6 months after, and now it's snapped again!!! As you can see in the pic it's snapped at the weld again. I've emailed Abarth UK and Autoworld, so I'll see what they say.

It's unfair that I have to mess around driving it to and from a dealer 130 miles away (in total) and to find out it's not fixed. I'm actually a bit fed up with the car, even though it's the best I've owned, I just don't have the patience and time to be messing around getting it fixed. My missus is also expecting in Nov, so I don't want to be driving a baby in a car who's clutch pedal keeps on breaking  :thumbd:

This sucks. In my opinion, you should be given a replacement car. In fact, i thought they agreed that's what was going to happen? I thought by law if a fault occurs 3 times or more then it's not capable of it's job and a replacement should be issued.

I sympathise with you though, when mine was playing up, it was to and from the dealer, 200 miles each time! Your circumstances are different now, your unborn baby should take priority. If that were me, i would probably ask the dealer to buy the car back off you maybe?

I simply cannot understand (not taking a dig at you) how that can happen. It is a piece of metal that should be strong. I have ragged mine on racetracks all over europe and there is not an issue (but I do have a squeaky seat!)

have they actually replaced the pedal twice or just welded it up badly?

I know what you mean, I can't understand it. It should be strong enough to cope with strains more than someone pressing it with their foot! I've said from the beginning, even when it broke the first time that it's something more sinister than just the part, but Abarth and Autoworld just keep on trying to fix it, which I suppose is the legal route....

I've been told that the actual part has been replaced on both occasions. Looking at the pics from the 1st, 2nd and 3rd time, the snap is in exactly the same position i.e. where the weld ends.

The car in my opinion is unsafe to drive, but I need it for work! Peter Robinson has already emailed me tonight saying he'll get Autoworld to look into it so I'll see what they say. Hopefully I'll get a replacement, I can't be ar** messing around driving to and from dealers when the babys born, its just not funny anymore  :(

I was going to swap cars with a used demo after the 2nd time, but I was worried it would have been ragged and not looked after properly, thus creating more problems in the future! If they offer it this time, I'll probably accept, although a Brand New car would suit me considering this car has been like a 2nd hand one, although my missus has a £600 R reg Brava and thats been problem free!

Sorry to hear about the hassle Simon.  I hope someone finds a permanent fix for you.

I received a response from Peter Robinson @ Abarth UK who says the manufacturing of the clutch pedal has now been slightly modified due to the incidents on my car. In his words "The Modified Pedal has been strengthened by increasing the length of weld in the affected area & by adding weld to the other side."

He has offered for the modified pedal to be fitted and offered some vouchers. Just wish Abarth would have contacted me when they decided to modify the pedal, because it was inevitable mine would break again.

Should we all be having this update. Does the clutch failure apply to a certain period of manufacture, for instance
we have a 10 plate car, do we have the modified clutch.

Would be interested to know this too  :)

Would the easiest way to find out be to have a look at it ??? can you see the welds from the footwell  ???
They laugh at us because we are different, We pity them because they are all the same.

According to our Master Tech this is a known issue but it effects relitavely few cars.
Si, you appear to have been very unlucky.
There was talk of a modified pedal being produced but We haven't seen one yet. That may only be because We haven't had one fail yet.
I would doubt this will end up as a recall but I will keep you informed if it does end up being an item that is recalled.

To check the weld, I just got my phone camera and depressed the pedal and took a few pics under the foot well.

Looking at all the pics (of all 3 breaks) the break is in the exact same place - where the weld ends.

Could be a stress relief problem simon, common cause of weld failure.the welds dont look good to me, for instance a 6mm fillet weld will
accomodate around 1 ton of shear force. cracking occur's in welds in which its parent area is suddenly induced  to localised heat, up to 3000 deg f in some weld procedures. :o this is of coarse my opinion only, probably a friday afternoon weld op. ;D

Well the pedal is going to be replaced with the New modified pedal and Peter Robinson is going to try and get me the Monza exhaust fitted free of charge for the hassle I've had. If he pulls it off it would certainly give me a lot more confidence in the Abarth / Fiat brand and prove that they care about their customers :)
