Couple of minor issues
« on: December 16, 2011, 07:36:52 AM »
Firstly brakes, squealing like hell when reversing and it's doing my head in. Will replacing pads stop this? Is there anything I can do? I know it's been mentioned quite a bit so sorry for bringing it up again.

Secondly, my steering wheel has started making a noise when turning, like a coiled spring making a sort of pinging noise. It's not very loud but I'm pretty sure it only started recently. Anyone else had this?

Cheers guys

as for brakes dealers will nearly always say replace them, replace them (ker ching!)  but probably just need stripping and cleaning.

I had the howling rear brakes, when reversing (parking), dealer cleaned stopped for a while but returned.
I upgraded to ss brakes and now no noise.

The steering noise could be dry top mounts due to cold weather - spray some wd40 on the bushes/mounts.
I had a slight creak from the top mounts after i installed the eibach pros, greased up now fine.

The brake noise is very annoying and loud, as of yet no cure, dealer informed me of this.

Mine has developed exactly the same problems since it got cold!

My Alsfa Mito that I had ebfore did the same with the rear brakes.  Just needs a bit of copperslip.  Goes away for a bit but will come back.   Im gonna do it myself when the weather gets a bit better.

The springy noice in the column does seem to be with the tempo has dropped. I notrice if you get it super warm in the car, it goes away!  Not overly worried about it.  If its still there in the spring, it can go to the delaers to be sorted.

If in doubt don't. I would not recommend you spray WD40 on your brakes unless you are very careful not to spray any on the discs or pads.
Top mounts you can spray, they are near to the bonnet hinges they are in the centre of a cup that is half covered in rubber.

How much was it to upgrade to the SS brakes? Get a bit of an Xmas bonus so might invest.

Moots: The brakes were basically given to me because i was a ex employee of Fiat and my mate had a spare set lying around which i gratefully accepted. I believe the discs are about £300 for the front set along? and the pads are in the region of £100., remember seeing them on ebay a while ago. I think Daron at TMC is doing a brake set  :thumb:

Copper slip on the back calipers, noise all gone!

WD40 didnt get rid of the springy noie though.  it sounds like its in the column somewhere.

Are they really that good? Seeing as its the rears that make the noise I might just change pads
