Help Please - 695 Tributo - Urgent
« on: January 11, 2011, 07:20:01 PM »
Sorry for this saga droning on-and-on but it is clear that my second attempt at finding an Abarth dealer and getting the car I wanted is starting to prove nearly as traumatic as the first.

Having paid for the car (100% and upfront), it arriving in the UK before christmas, but I am still not able to take delivery. The latest from Platts is that having signed the DVLA documents on Sunday, they now need me to provide a utility bill, passport, driving licence and insurance cover note in order for them to register the car to me.

I tried today to get a cover note but guess what my insurers (Admiral Multi-car policy) will not insure a car until it is DVLA registered... ???

Surely registering cars is something Platts do EVERY day why is this one any different. ???

Those of you that have your cars already what process did you go through?  :bat: :aurelius: :deadhorse:
How much did you have to do and how much did the dealer do (i.e. what was the value added service they provided)? Did you have to do any of this stuff?

Is there anyone at Abarth UK who can just help platts through this i live two hours away and work pretty much full time so I need this to be sorted without me doing all the work.....

It is clear that the guys at platts are doing this for the very first time so each step seems to be unclear to them.

As a first experience with the Abarth Brand it is making me want to scream and pull my hair out nevermind build any kind of brand loyalty..........

Can anyone help before I do something rash

As them for the seven day free insurance. That will get you over the main obstacle. Otherwise, good luck!

My car was registered with DVLA prior to collection, around 2 weeks beforehand if I remember correctly.
The process was 100% by the dealer.

There is a difference to this procedure though.
Normally a brand new car will be registered by the dealer on their own premises using the DVLA  AFRL system. This is quite a simple process and only requires a signed AFRL certificate and a current insurance certificate.
The 695's are a different kettle of fish.
They are registered in Turin by Abarth so that they can make the modifications to turn them into 695's without having to go through all the homologation process again. This cuts down on time and costs, otherwise the cars would have been far more expensive for such a limited run of vehicles.
This means that the process with the DVLA is different because you are effectively re-registering an imported vehicle. You'll find that its not Platts being difficult or incompetent but they have probably never had to go through this process before as most main dealers don't deal in imported vehicles.
DVLA rules can also change at the drop of a hat and half the time the information on their own website is out of date. Providing I.D. and utility bills are standard form of identity used to cut down on fraud.
I know this isn't much comfort to you at the moment but the best advice is to be patient for a little longer and let DVLA throw all the red tape and beaurocratic nonsense at Platts so they can sift through it and ask you for any further proofs / information that DVLA ask for.

thanks John you must be quite sick of me by now but you always help with information,

I hope you are right about the DVLA because i seem to be in a catch 22 now, without insurance I am not able to re-register the car for the UK, and likewise am unable to get insurance until the car is UK registered.

After our bad experience with Bauer Millet, we enquired at Platts as it was sure it was the next nearest dealership but they seemed confident that the process would be the same as "Mr Platts 8c". They had done that car via the same process, they assured us, but we later found out he had actually driven his car back from Italy himself so not the same.

Aeroman talks about his dealer handling all the paperwork for him.

I understand why Abarth have done what they have done from their point of view, but to have not trained the dealers or at least have someone coordinating the UK cars and advising customers seems simply stupid and not on for a car costing 36k Euro. They have clearly not thought about the customer experience at all for this version of the car. You spend more but get a worse process than for the regular Abarth Models!!!!

Each tributo customer is at the mercy of the dealer concerned and from what i can see they have no financial motivation in the deal at all. (No part-ex, No margin, No income) so perhaps we are not top of their agenda even though our car is taking up a bay in their workshop.

I can assure you that all dealers will take 695 customers seriously, not only for the margin they make but for the refferal buisiness that is likely to be gained from good service.
The main problem lies with the fact that the cars were not supplied through Abarth U.K.
Whilst we were told the order process etc there has never been a memo from Turin on how to register the cars in the U.K.
This is because they probably don't know the process in the U.K. themselves.
I certainly understand your frustrations but the process is probably as new to Platts as it is to you :thumbd:

We usually give 7 days insurance cover for free. All this allows us to do is tax the car. This should give you the appropriate cover required by the DVLA. Ask Platts if they can provide it.

With regards to Bauer Millett, I have always found their service first class and can't grumble, but of course I am unaware of the details of your experience. What happened?

And so it continues....
I was given two insurance companies today by platts who at least knew that the 695 tributo exists. The trouble now is they said that because of the cars value the security on the car needs to be thatcham category1 but the 695 only comes with level 2 security. Both insurers say I have to have a tracker device fitted even though I live in the lowest risk of areas AND it will be garaged overnight.

So.......

Tonights question......

Has anyone else got their 695 insured without this extra expense and more importantly time required further delaying me registering the car delivery of my car?
If you had to get a tracker what are the best value / quickest to fit?

It might be worth visiting a price comparison site? As daft as it sounds, i was getting a few quotes for the A500 the other day, when it asked me to select a vehicle, there was a choice, from Abarth 500 135 HP, esse esse, Convertible and yes believe it or not 695 Tributo Ferrari was there too!

Worth a go?

Already got past that (thank god) as both insurers asked if it was the UK RHD version  which of course it is  :thumb:
