Just a quickie, where's the 500's oil filter??
« on: March 02, 2010, 11:37:21 PM »
:thumb: Yes I know I must be a complete simpleton not to know but the car is Mum and Dads and i've only been under the bonnet once, its done 5500 now so we'll do an oil change this weekend just to be nice. I've got the parts but to avoid getting any dirtier than i have to could some kind soul tell me where the filter lives and also is the sump bung the usual 12mm allen or something different?
Forewarned is forearmed and all that!

Many thanks
Marcus

Now here's the thing, this has been read by 26 people and yet no one seems to know where it is? Go on, surely someone's looked under the bonnet??

I read it... and thought "not a bl**dy clue"

... I know where to check/top up my coolant, washer fluid and oil, but more technical than that? I'm the wrong man  ;D

I miss Chunky Monkey at times like this! (he was the Abarth technician at Vospers -- he was great to have on the forum)

Behind some under-surface trim, not on display.
grigio campovolo - kit estetico nero - pelle nera - tetto in vetro fisso - cerchi in lega 16" - koni FSD - molle SS - G-Tech S - distinctly minty

the oil filters are a right bugger to get at, a little easier on the 500 than the AGP(unless the AGP is an SS then its a doddle!!)
i'll take some pics at work and post them up, basically its at the front of the engine on the left hand side

Thanks for the masses  of replies, i've tracked it down, with the help of a little pointer from a gent i used to work with (Thanks again!)
On the 500 Abarth it sits "conveniently" right below the air in pipe/clean air pipe to the turbo. Remove that and it's reasonably gettable attable! Although its a bit of a wiggle to get to, and its a cartridge that you remove vertically! Nice recipe for oil drips everywhere!!
But I've stopped again now because i've been defeated by an air gun wielding retard who seems to have overtightened anything he could get his stupid, senseless hands on!!!
I cant shift the oil drain plug even using a half inch drive breaker bar!!!!!!!!
Frightening!
I just hope it was a sensible robot who built our engine!!  :thumb:

Before you strip the thread on the sump why not invest one of these vacuum pump extractors which suck the oil up the dipstick hole...dont even need to get under the car...cost about £25.
I use one on our boat and it's excellent

See, I used to work at Cosworth, tried one of those vacuum extractors, and only used it once. Really didnt want to help me at all!
Obviously I'm not suggesting it was the same one, maybe i need to investigate them again. Only thing is by flushing the oil down and out through the drain you have to assume any debris not in the filter goes with it. I dont know how well the pump would do on that front?
