Knock, Knock, Knock...

Guess what that is? Yep, it's me hammering the final nail into the coffin of the A500 (i feel like it) ironically it's also the noise i'm hearing with the latest fault with my car, which as you all know, is becoming a joke. I'm almost too embarrassed to make anymore topics, this will be the 90th topic I've made, i wonder how many of those are related to problems with my car?

It could be related to the squealing I'm getting, some of you suggested a wheel bearing, but basically you can hear it as you come to a stop, and as you pull off, and on a bumpy road, windows up and windows down. It sounds similar to the click you get when the air con goes on off, but it's continuous and is coming fro the N/S front wheel. But on the move it's a softer thudding noise, more like a shock or drop bar link connection or whatever it's called. Ah well...

Ok, obviously everybody is clueless about this, but can some mechanical minded person ensure me the car is safe to drive? I read on here a month or two ago about some link/joint snapping and causing the car to crash! Could this happen on my car? I'm doing at least 100 miles tomorrow so I'd like to know it's safe for a long journey (I'll put up with the noise until nest week!)

I doubt anyone would want to say its safe to drive without hearing the noise or looking at the car.
If I were you I would take it to the local garage and get them to put it in the air and just check everyting is OK.
It could be wheel bearing or driveshaft but I also had a problem with a car making a similar noise when the wheel nuts had come loose.

Good idea, doubt i'll get a chance now though, rural Wales, probably shut on Saturdays (and every shop is shut on Wednesdays too!) but i'll probably check the nuts are tight myself.

It's safe.

There I have said it.

I have driven cars that have been far from road worthy in the past, often at excessive speed.

So a squealing should be ok.

Unless you have a pig stuck in the boot, then it may be unsafe.

Had the front wheel off this morning, and had a poke around. Couldn't see anything that would suggest a knocking sound but then again i don't know what i'm looking for! Spring/shock were solid too (i thought i might have bust a spring) Driveshaft moves a bit back and forth but i think this is normal. As far as i could see, all the bushes looked present too. So could it be a bearing? CV joint?

What sand?  ;) Can somebody tell me if it's acceptable/safe to jack the car in this way please. Bit late now if it isn't had both wheels off today... It's on a big bolt connected to a big black metal thing if that helps, could be the chassis leg. Seems safe, reassuring to see you don't get a jack or a wheel brace with the A500!  ::)

thats a good place to jack the car mate.
as regards to your noise can you get any "lift" in your front wheel?

A similar knocking / clunking sound has developed on my car as well as the squeeling that i cant seem to solve.

Did you get any further with this DraigFlag?

Thanks
Paul

Yes, turns out some sort of suspension related bush or pad was apparently put in the wrong way around in the factory?! Hasn't returned yet. Still got the squealing brakes though, but only when NOT braking. Can live with it though.
