Knocking noise
« on: January 11, 2012, 06:41:07 PM »
Another thread on knocking noises. . .

I've started getting a knocking noise when going over speed bumps, the front ends fine but the rear sounds like something is loose. I've checked the stuff under the boot (wheel repair) which was a bit loose but tightening it up made no difference. If I push down on the back of the car I don't get any noises it only seems to happen on speed bumps. Any ideas?

I don't have konis btw

Just an idea:
You might want to give this thread a better, more descriptive name :P

Exhaust fix?
Repair kit in the boot fix?

Point being I don't know what's making the noise. So to say exhaust knocking noise would be daft tbh.

Hey mate

It might need some WD40 on all the suspension bushes, try that first.

If its still there drive with the seats down, if its still there then get some one in the back when you go over bumps, it could be anything to be honest.

I get a creak and now i dont care i just drive the dam car and let the music or engine/exhaust noises overcome the other noises  ;D

What? Like an mans dangles .

On the other hand take everything out even the carpet from the boot then may find what causing it.

Sounds stupid but it probably is the door locks. Exactly the same problem, thought my suspension was creaking then one day i sat quite low and could hear it was indeed coming from the door and not the rear of the car. Wd40'd the lock like a good'un and hey presto! Have to do it every other week or so but it stops it. Try white grease or 3in1 oil and that is a better lubricant. :thumb:

Do you have the Monza fitted?  Apparently the clearances on that can be tight and can cause a knocking.  Drive with the seats down as well to make sure they aren't the problem.  Other than that I'm not sure.

Check both front and rear shock mountings. My fronts failed at 7,300 miles - well that's when it was spotted whilst changing worn front tyres.

Well, it's had the Koni's fitted and it's made no difference :( really doing my head in. It's more of a rattling noise than a knock.

Had the missus sit in the back and it's coming from both sides at the rear sounds like it might be coming from the wheel arches. No idea what it could be now :(

Have you tried the loop of insulating tape on the rear seats catch yet? Stopped one of my rattles. I also had a problem with the front passenger seat rattling once. Took me ages to locate that one, it can be hard to hear exactly where a noise is coming from. Fixed that with some packing foam underneath.

Think i'm going to have to get someone to look at it again, which means either driving around with it for a month when the service is booked or taking it to my local indy guy to have a look at. i wouldn't be bothered but it sounds like something is loose which is worrying me.

I've tried moving the exhaust but it seems solid, pushing down on the back of the car doesn't make any noise and i've taken the stuff out of the spare compartment which made no difference either. Also tried slamming the seats back into place.  ??? :-\

If the cars still under warrently just return it to the dealer and ask them to reslove the issue. Give them a bell and ask if it can be looked at as it could be something important it might be something simple like everybody has mentioned.

OK, may sound daft but I have noticed where my "knock" is coming from.   My rear number plate has been secured by 2 screws at the far top right and left hand corners.

The number plate can now flap around at the bottom and it knocks against the tailgate.  Now, doesnt seem like much but when I close the tailgate the number plate makes a fair dunt noise as it slams against the metal of the boot.  I recognised the same noise going over speed bumps (slightly too fast) so knew the number plate was rattling away because of the way they have secured it.  it sounds worse from the inside and it knocks away.

I have now put in 2 small sticky pads at the bottom corners of the plate and its stopped the noise.   ;)
