Leaks?
« on: January 07, 2012, 08:19:54 PM »
I just picked up my A500 from the Abarth dealer, (12K on the clock). I have noticed two advisories on the receipt from its previous service last year. One for "slight coolant leak" and one for "slight gear box leak". The dealer neglected to mention these when I asked him if there were any remarks on the service history. Is this something to worry about? Am I likely to be hit with a big bill at the next service?

Have you asked them if they have been fixed?

Grmpf, typical dealer's speak, Any leak is undesirable. Go back and get it fixed.  By the dealer without cost to you.  Bah.  Tell them they cannot sell you any leaking car.  Because according to EU laws, they are not supposed to.  Bah.

First thing in the morning when the car is cold, stick a strip of pvc tape on the side of the expansion tank of the level. Just keep an eye on it for a few weeks, if the level goes down, you still have a leak. Gearbox harder to do, just check for fresh oil on the casings.

Haven't had a chance to talk to them yet. Picked the car up last thing yesterday, didn't get to go through all the history docs until today. I'll call them as soon as I can, the pain is I am out of the country next week. They claimed they do a 200 point mechanical inspection before selling the car, if they have sold me a car with outstanding advisories without telling me beforehand I'm going to be a bit peeved.

Hi Luke, just go back to your dealer, admit that you are not the world's greatest car expert, but that you have the backing of this forum and leaks are not acceptable.  Tell them that you are not impressed, neither are we!.  Where did you buy the car from?  This is as good a place as any to tell.  Please do tell.  These days, with the web, we have a voice.  Make sure your's is heard by the dealer who sold you the car.  We want no leaks!

The gearbox leak is probably the endplate, quite commonish. They found our leak whilst replacing a driveshaft gaitor.
Its not serious but needs resealing, if it is that.

Is that what you can see on the nearside once the wheel is removed?

I had a coolant leak and also a gearbox leak, turned out to be the 5th gear end casing and a metal pipe that goes to the waterpump, apparently theres a modified pipe now.
The coolant leak job meant the front end of the car had to come off.

Both items need addressing asap.

Yep thats the one, once the wheel was off you could see the congealed  oil around the endplate.

Thanks, I got it from Meridien Milano in Portsmouth. They have been very professional about everything else and there is no evidence they have done anything wrong as yet. They might have been fixed before they got the car or they may have fixed these leaks themselves and just forgotten to document it. Unfortunately I am not going to be able to inspect the car in detail before I fly to France tomorrow but I'll call them from France on Monday and ask for their side of the story.

Thanks for your support everyone, it is much appreciated.

Luke

Lets us know what comes of the call, Im not suprised previous problems or niggles wheren't brought to your attention after all they are looking to get your money, they are a car sales business but after care is also a big part of their business too sadly some dealers do the second bit better than others.

You could have bought a £30k second hand Merc and had the same problems, also Id (personally) take the 200 spot check with a pinch of salt, if it starts, stops, isnt sitting in a puddle of something, isnt rattling like a old tin can and hasnt got any trim hanging off Id be suprised if some cars are checked any further.

Out of interest, is it worth people (including myself) asking the next time your car is in for a service/inspection etc to ask if the casing of the gearbox is dry?
