Rear brakes sticking
« on: January 11, 2010, 10:28:16 PM »
It's not just the freezing temperatures, it's happened a few times even before we had sub-zero weather. Usually when i'm parked over night or during work, i'll go to pull away after taking the handbrake off and there's a clunk and some resistance before pulling away. Will take it back when i get time. Has anyone else had the same problem?

Brake dust causing the pads to 'bind' GTI, 159 all did it and very occasionaly the 500 does it too. May notice squeaky brakes as well. Once the weather improves find a nice clear straight road, get to 40 and brake firmly normally helps clear them I find.

Could be something more sinister but likely just binding.

I never park with the handbrake when it freezes. It can freeze so you cannot drive anymore...

But even in gear and without the handbrake, I feel that clunk! I think its like what Olopboy said ;)!

Grtz TehShadow73.

PS: even got it on warm days when i have washed the car the day before and didn´t drive it untill the day after!

I have this too, initially thought it was the hill holder, until i realised the ground was completely level  ::) makes quite a clunk at times, but it's only after it's been parked up for a long period in the cold. Cars hate winter...

I've had the problem you describe on a number of previous vehicles also; however, on Sunday I felt that my A500s braking was definitely impaired. Normally a light touch is enough to enduce a rapid drop in speed but on Sunday nothing happened. I had to give the brakes a bit of force to get them to bite. When they did, they still felt a bit weird. I presume it must be some sort of corrosion/deposit caused by the salt & road conditions. ???

I agree with Hosepipe, it happens to most cars with disc brakes and also our old KA sport with drum brakes. The pads 'rust' to tthe disc when it is very damp/wet. This is due tto lack of chromium in the discs.

I have also known clutch plates sticking to the flywheel on long term storage cars.

Cheers guys, I'll wait until this rubbish weather clears and see if it continues. If it does I guess I can get them cleaned under warranty.

An idea to clean them is to spray some wheel cleaner, what ever it is that you use on your wheels, onto the discs and wait a few minutes before rinsing. I usually find this helps stop the brakes sticking and makes them feel sharper next use.

Thread resurrection....

The brake callipers on A500C stuck a few times and it made a horrible clunking noise when I attempted to move off (with handbrake off!)

And before 'winter' 'cold weather' might be mentioned...A500C is garaged every night. As a matter of fact, it has never been parked outside overnight since collecting it on 12th October. Nealry 1800 miles on the odometer.

Anyone else has the same issue?

I have e-mailed Ben at Research to get it looked at ASAP.

Yes, a clunk for me this morning getting the car out of the garage after 2 weeks of it sitting there.  It just seems to be corrosion so I'm not worried about it.  I was far more concerned about the massing bang I got when I hit a new pothole that had appeared over the holidays.  Car seems to be OK though...phew!!

I have to say I've never seen as much corrosion as on Milo's discs after a week of inactivity and poor weather. Hopefully it'll soon wear off. The other cars have been next to him for the same period and are absolutely fine though.  :thumbd:

hi this happens with mine when I garage after washing in summer or winter. pads bond to discs.  answer is to drive around block after washing with left foot lightly on brake to heat them up and dry them thoroughly. the problem we are all encountering now is because of damp weather.
cant say that it has affected the performance in any way apart from moving off and breaking the bond.

Yeah, I had this with my GPA. On the left rear wheel.  Conclusion was that the brake pad did not wear down.  Culminated in the occasional very loud squeak on the Autobahn. going at 130mph. I had the pads and discs changed in November and it was ok for a while.  But the left rear still sticks. Not as bad as before, but I notice sometimes in bad weather or after salty roads.  Something about the wear of the left rear brake pad lipping the disc.  Next service I shall report back that it ain't fixed yet.
