Removing the tyre pressure sensors without the tool?
« on: December 20, 2010, 03:51:32 PM »
I do not appear to have been given the tool to remove the tyre pressure sensors from a tyre that needs to be replaced urgently.  As the general consensus is the Esseesse kit sensors are useless I am not worried about refitting them.  They are currently all red anyway.

Can the tyre be replaced without removing the sensor?

Could the valve area be cut out of the old tyre so I can remove the sensor at a later date  - just in case I want to discover how useless they are for myself?

As far as I know tyre pressure sensors are attached to the valve itself and stuck to the alloy wheel not the tyre

I have the box they came in and from the picture on that it looks like they just replace the dust caps with the existing valve staying in place.

I have done a bit of googling and this is the Italian website for them http://www.lasertyre.it/

they do just replace the dust caps,  I think if you have a spanner you can hold the bottom part and unscrew the top to get them off. ???

Thanks for the replies.

The dealer has suggested that we can just get the tyre fitter to slit the valve to let the air out, keep it and then detach the sensor when they send us a replacement tool.

Are the tyre pressure sensors useless? Currently all 4 are red.  The tyres are not visibly under inflated - not a good way to check but the best I can do for now.  I thought there was some kind of remote sensor in the car that indicated that they were under inflated so I did not realise what the red caps meant when I picked the car up on Saturday.  I thought they were always red.

Borrowing a tool to remove all the sensors may be handy if the tool from the dealer does not turn up in the next few days - I would not want to end up stuck with a flat tyre somewhere and not be able to fix it.   If the tool does not turn up soon I will probably be begging to borrow one from a local saviour in the next few days. I live in Ash Vale and work in Fleet.

I'll have a quick go with some pliers gently in the morning.

We are not having much luck with cars at the moment.  My wifes company car is waiting to be picked up for repair after she was hit gently by a taxi and the courtesy car has not turned up.

:D Thanks, if the tool does not turn up in the next day or two I may ask if I can visit to remove the sensors.

The tyre fitter chopped off the tyre pressure sensor and replaced the iffy tyre.  As it was early we decided to pop up to Thames to get a removal tool of our own.  Thames were excellent and attempted to reset all the other tyre sensors and then decided to replace the lot.  :thumb:  So we now have brand new tyre pressure sensors on all four wheels.  I'm not sure how much use they will be but we will give them ago.

Thanks for the offer Ninjauk, it was appreciated. :thumb:

My sesnors have never worked since they went from green to red. But at least they match the bodywork!

The tyre pressure sensors are useless - as everyone else seems to have already noticed.  They are £250 locking dust caps.  I followed the instuctions carefully and checked with 4 different tyre pressure gauges - 3 agreed with each other. The 500 Abarth tyre pressure gauge seems reasonably accurate but very fiddly to use.
