Squealing
« on: March 28, 2010, 09:58:04 PM »
Hopefully nothing major this time  ::) but the past few days, when I've been having a bit of fun in the A500, there is a Godawful squealing sound from the front wheels once shes warmed up. It's not when you press the brakes, but just driving along at around 20 to 30 MPH. I know it's not a stone stuck in the brakes because I've had that before, but strangely the squealing stops if you brake  ???

Any ideas? Do i need brake pads already? Could it be the protective plate thing expanding in the heat and rubbing? Bearings? Any help appreciated  :thumb:

I'm not sure, the roads haven't been gritted for over a month now and it's been really dry.

From looking at your pics it could be from all the brake dust and cr*p on your wheels  ;)

Hi

I had this with one of the back brakes. One of my mates just cleaned up the shims and the pads... problem solved. Could be a little stone or dust getting stuck or something.

Had a similar noise in my 914. Used to stop below 20mph and disappeared above 35mph. It was a wheel bearing problem.

Seems to do it now whether it's hot or cold, at low speed. Very embarrassing when driving round town! If it were something trapped in the brakes e.g. a stone, it would have dislodged itself by now. I just don't understand why it stops when i brake, it's usually the other way around i.e. squealing brakes!

I had this exact problem Paul in my Fiat 500. Sqeaked between 10-25mph roughly. Applied the brakes and it stopped, although the brakes then made a loud scuffing noise.

The problem sorted itself everytime I powerwashed the brakes, and got rid of as much crap as possible. They'd start squeaking again though after a couple of days. This was when it was quite warm however.

Try giving them a really good clean. If you've got the time and a trolley jack get the wheels off and see if it makes any difference. Having a poke around may alert you to something that could be causing the problem.

If it carries on, take it to the dealer, as it could be a wheel bearing issue like HP said.

The brakes have recently started squaking a bit on the Abarth, but I'm sure that's down to me not cleaning the car for a couple of weeks, after a hard drive on the North Yorks Moors.

Ta Joe, good idea. It's due a clean, been over 3 weeks! I just feel there's no point when it's rain, rain, snow, gritted roads, more rain etc!  :thumbd:

Hi, just thismorning mine started doing this again after having the rear wheel and caliper off.  But it only seems to do it after a hard drive, heat related maybe?

This may be worth a try...

Today i had a great day in the car, but annoyingly, despite a thorough clean and blast with the pressure washer, the squealing returned! Brakes weren't even hot, it was so loud and happened when just driving at around 10 to 20 MPH. Thing is, a few minutes later it would stop, then start again. Does the fact that it comes and goes help solve what the noise could be? Surely if it were a bearing, it would be noisy all the time?

Was a bit embarrassing at times, considering how many people were all over the place!

Put a bit of copper grease behind each pad, but if you do that you may as well change the pads as well  ;D
