Best way to get DAB in the car?
« on: May 21, 2011, 11:50:46 AM »
Okay, FM is great I can get the pirate stations I want (when Im in the right area) but miss Planet Rock as my works Ford S-Max has the Sony DAB head unit and I do miss it when Im in the Alfa and the 500.

I havent got a iPhone or smart phone so cant run that through the car so whats the alternative?

I know you can get like a plug in device which receives the DAB signal and then you plug that into the radio, not sure I like that, then there's the possiblity of a aftermarket headunit... in two minds about that too.

So other than a smart phone is there anyother way to get DAB into the 500?

This would do it, the Pure Highway. I'm thinking of getting one myself.

It receives DAB radio over air and transmits back over FM to your car head unit. It's around £70 I think.

One of the on the road reps at work has the above item, was in the car with him the other day and seems to work extremely well!

I've had one for about 3 years (i'm a 5live/talksport addict and got fed up with AM reception).  Works pretty good once you've found a 'free' FM frequency to tune it in to.  Would work much better if the standard head unit had an aux input.

Only problems i've found are if you travel longish distances then the 'free' FM frequency you've tuned to starts to pick up another signal which spoils the reception and you have to search for another 'free' FM frequency.  The auto search for a free frequency is not that good and it's better to do it manualy.  Once set up though it's great.  Other thing it could do with is illuminated buttons.

I've custom fit mine to the pull off panel below the fog lights switches (AGP) so it looks tidy and all the wiring is out the way  ;)

I'm saving my pennies for the new Parrot Asteroid.

It's not DAB but it has a regular FM tuner and internet radio via a stick on GPS dongle. I think it looks nicely understated and Parrot also promise full steering wheel control for both stereo and phone use.
Loads of rear mounted connectivity too to lose those cables.
Should be like a Blue and Me that works. (Sorry B&M fans)
Oh and it's not out yet.

But it doesn't have a DAB tuner built into it....
