Will an ipod nano 1st Gen work in a Abarth 500

Will an ipod nano 1st Gen work in a Abarth 500? Or do I need a newer one to be compatible.

Nothing seems to happen at either end when I plug it in.

At a guess I would doubt it would work via the usb, 1st gen nanos don't have the file management system the same way the larger ipods do, they were quite simplistic beasties. IIRC it has to be IPod/ITouch or IPhone to be able to play music from
