We came very close to buying one back in the summer, it was a beautiful little thing.  Whilst we were waiting for the money to come through the damn thing sold!

All ill say is that getting one with a disc brake conversion (for the front) is a good idea.  The one we drove was drums all round and it was scary.  

Engine, clutch etc all surprisingly good but my God the brakes were something else Shocked

I have heard the standard brakes are pretty shocking! Was it a little yellow one you were looking at euroboy? It seems to ring a bell...

NOOO.. don,t want my name on the car, just seeing my engine put to good use would be enough.

might need it back if the x1/9 blows up though.  not likely to happen now its in gentle retirement Whistle

Yup indeed, it was fantastic - totally restored.

I had to drive it bare feet otherwise I would hit all the pedals at once.  A classic 500 is still on the list for me someday, but for now more practical cars are in order.

Rust (and people trying to hide it) will unfortunately be your major problem Thumb Down
I remember when we went to the Fiat 500 launch in Turin. Fiat had managed to find loads of mint condition 500's and lined them up. It looked great Thumb Up
Maybe it would be cheaper to find one on Italian e-bay and import it rather than buying a dog over here and it turning into a "money pit" Thumb Down

Seen both those David & Martin, thanks but they're not really what I'm after  Undecided

In fact I'm not sure what I'm after, although John, you may be onto something with an Italian car. I'd love a LHD car anyway. Less likely to have rusted as the sun shines over there! I'm in no rush to buy one, but if I do it may be as a replacement for my current Abarth (shock horror) as I need something cheap, so I can start looking for somewhere to live etc...!

Having owned cars of this era when I first started driving the question really has to be why on earth anyone would even consider it, let alone try to actually use one for any real world driving?

Cars held together with rust, fibre glass and filler, drum brakes - mmm lovely in the wet, no traction, steering that you actually have to physically steer the car, no stability control and if you do hit something you are running the chance of getting the engine on your legs.

Stuff that, been there - done it .

If you do decide to do it, can I suggest getting some lessons from someone who knows how to drive cars like this. The skid control centre in Northamptonshire has some elderly Fords that it uses to teach you to control skids in!
