Abarth variable back-pressure exhaust system
« on: June 11, 2009, 05:56:41 PM »
As mentioned in the Abarth Corse by Sabelt seats and Grande Punto Abarth "SuperSport" threads, there's a new accessory exhaust coming for both 500 and GPA.

It's described as a variable back-pressure exhaust system - it uses a sprung butterfly valve at the main joint.  As the revs rise beyond 4,000rpm or so, the pressure in the system forces open the valve allowing a portion of the exhaust gas to bypass the silencer through the additional pipes, and that creates a change in the noise.

A photo that possibly depicts the system for the 500 appeared on the excellent German Abarth forum recently.  It looks subtly different to that fitted to the 'Ferrari' 500s.

No info on price or availability, although I've heard the system for the 500 is likely to land before the one for the GPA.

Update: it's been launched with full details here - Abarth, Magneti Marelli Record Monza exhaust systems

I so want this provided a) it still retains the cheekyness of the standard at low revs b) isn't a completly rediculous price.

Can't see anything on the forum discussing any power gains (saying that my German is rustier than an alfasud in a field), going to have to wait for the official release I guess to find out. Personally not bothered by any power gains I just want the standard exhuast sound with added winsauce towards the top end

None of the stuff from Abarth has made any mention of power gains; it's just for added aural excitement.  GPA could definitely use some of that.

It looks as though it would be quite easy to keep that valve open permanently.

Unfortunately it also looks as though the exhaust is made from mild steel.

Doesn't that make it significantly lighter??

it does but it rusts..... such as the stock exhaust system.... 3 years of hard use and we will be changing them :S

Do you think that is the only type of system, i.e. indentical for AGP? if so you would have to get the welding iron out wouldnt you?

Don't follow you, Lewis.  The GPA system will be completely different.

On the corrosion issue, this one looks pretty well powder-coated to me; should last longer than the factory-fit item.

Yes.  :thumbd:

FIAT ones (especially the connecting bolts/nuts) also seem to be made of that special type of mild steel called cheesium.

Good to know, just thought at first you were saying it was a general system since its in the general abarth area.
