Body shops warranties etc.
« on: January 12, 2012, 05:45:55 PM »
Hubby has just called to say he's pranged my car. Thankfully noone was hurt.

I'm assuming the AA will bring him home, but I'm a bit torn over where we get him fixed. Do I have to have it done in an Abarth body shop to keep the bodywork warranty?

hey paula, sorry to hear that glad hes ok.

I think it can be  taken anywhere depending on the damage done.e.g. my brother pranged his wheel arch on his volvo and a local body shop did it without affecting the warantee.what sort of damage is done?

The good new is I'm not having to drive and get him - ive been off today as been having problems with the migraines  The AA will only get you to a place of safety in the event of an accident - and the insurance company would normally just recover the car - but luckily the are willing to recover it home as he's not that far away.

He says the body work isn't too bad, but the stearing is broken whatever that means. I'm not too worried about the car as neither of us has had an accident in yonks and my no claims is insured so it will get properly fixed. I'm more concerned about the fact that chris seems determined to get to Yorkshire for his meeting tomorrow after he's been involved in a motorway shunt today. Apparently he was stuck across the middle and outside lane with cars steaming past him until the other guy got out and flagged them down  :o . Think they pretty much closed the m1 until the police turned up to sort things.

We'll see what the insurance says.

Thanks - don't think it's that bad. Apparently his ride home has arrived.

Sorry to hear about this, but glad that Chris is OK. Cars are easier to repair (or replace) than people.

As to your original question, insurance companies tend to think it is their prerogative to decide where the car will be repaired, as they are paying for it, and many of them have done deals with preferred suppliers. They are unlikely to have a long list of Abarth body shops they would want to use, but you never know.

He's home - not too bad cosmetically, but the right front wheel can be waggled and I think one of my new wheels is scuffed  ::)

See - doesn't look too bad until you realise the other 3 wheels are pointing forwards.

Indeed, it does not look too bad.

The key thing to determine is whether the chassis underneath is bent or not. That will govern the amount of repair (or write off) required.

I think it could be pretty pricey though.
Looking at the wing panel it went all the way against the door.

Does not look bad, but could be more work to it than expected.

Still happy to hear that no one got injured!! :thumb:

Pretty sure it shouldN't be a writeoff - but Colin's right that we need to have the chassis checked before we know. It'll be a bit of a pain if it is because I don't really have the cash to top it up for a new one right now.

The gap insurance would cover that.
