Diff'rent Strokes
« on: January 12, 2011, 10:18:47 AM »
I know we're all Abarthisti together and all that, but do other 500 owners share my complete incomprehension at the attraction of the Punto?

To me, it just looks a bit ordinary.  Although I very much see the appeal of an ordinary car that goes a bit faster, I simply don't see much character in the Punto.

There.  I've said it.

I wouldn't worry about such feelings, I dare say a large number of AGP/APE owners have no idea why we love our drag Panda's so much, people have different ideas about what constitues good looking.

Although to me the real appeal of the Puntos is the drive the AGP SS is a far better drive than the 500

Depends what you mean by better. The Punto is more planted and stable at high speed and more grown up, but with proper suspension and fat wheels and tyres the 500 is a right laugh and thus, in my opinion, better!

You are about the only person on the forum to give an honest and unbiased opinion on both cars :thumb:

I am going to force Lloyd to take me out in his SS + TMC + Koni'd car, that is going to be a whole load of awesome.  I was thinking more the cars in their standard 'from the dealer' as the 500 needs to have the suspension changed to for it to handle as well as a AGP.

Although I realise this will change with the new SS kits

I think my real answer is  that i love both for different reasons, and its nice having the choice of either car in the morning though.
One thing that is apparent is that the Evo is far more comfortable and they should put the Evo seats in the 500, and the multi air engine.

We originally went to a dealer specifically to look at the AGP but I it did not have enough headroom - a common problem for me.  It was very nice to drive but I had to slouch to stop banging my head with each bump.  So we had a look at an A500 whilst we were there and it has far more headroom in the versions with a metal roof and it left us both grinning.

I saw the A500 and the AGP parked side by side on the Abarth stand at Le Mans in 2009 -  they both appealed, being economical compared to my other cars at the time and a bit of poke for fun.

When it came to it though everything about the A500 felt brash, but somehow effeminate.  The AGP was just a bit more understated, wasn't going to get every Corsa driver revving you at traffic signals and with a child seat to fit in the back, just a bit more 'useable'.

Horses for courses I guess, just depends on the buyers lifestyle and requirements.

What i don't get is that if the AGP or APE is better than a 500, then why in the Trofeo series do they pull all the bits from a Punto and whack them in the 500?...

You'd think they would choose the "better" car for racing no?

^^^
Marketing reasons most likely... plus possibly it's easier to make a lighter race car starting with a smaller base model.  I don't think it's possible to make a judgement based on the car used in the Trofeo being the best...  BTCC is another example of where not the best car from a manufacturer has always been used in the past (Volvo 850 Estate)... but it worked for marketing.
