To start or not to start?
« on: December 19, 2010, 12:15:32 PM »
You might have heard me mention (once or twice ) that my Abarth is a dry drive only, and thats great as I have a garage to keep her nice n dry and a cover to keep her warm. In the Summer when the weather didnt permit getting her out it wasnt too much of an issue as two weekends in a row was pretty rare and I think the longest I couldnt get her out was three weekends but I made sure I warmed her up slowly and gave her a good long run including a dam good clear out  :thumb:

Right, because of the current weather apart from last weekend when I started her up, pulled her out the garage and onto the drive to ideal for about 20mins she hasnt been out for better part of the month going on 6weeks.

So the question is:

Is it better to Start her up and let her ideal OR to leave her be?

I know running her without going anywhere isnt the best thing, and taking too much out the battery also isnt too good but is it better than leaving her too long to get cold without starting? Whats your opinions?

Hmmm tough call.

The freeze is apparently going to last at least a month and I wouldn't really fancy my chances of leaving it unused for a long time, never mind six weeks! On the other hand, I don't recommend turning it over once and let it idle for a while but that's my opinion.

I can only suggest once there is a thaw, even if brief, then go for a quick run - at least to get it to operating temp - to ensure liquids and battery are at peak of condition.

My A500C is garaged and this week, I've used it three times before the s*** hit the fan. I'd really like to go out right now for a blast for a laugh but I wouldn't be laughing if someone skidded into the back of me.

Good luck.

Hoping to get it out the garage over the Christmas break weather permitting, its not so much the wet or grit but where we are its quite hilly so the snow makes extra dodgy.

Last time I run it back n fourth on the drive just so the brakes where clear and the transmission etc actually turned even if for a few feet lol

I agree, use it or loose it. Whatever you buy, the weather is still going to happen. Do as many miles in it as you can to get your moneys worth. Only old Classics should be used in the dry  :thumb:

well i do believe in using the car but obviosly main risk is sliding around kerbing etc or somebody going into you.i know somebody can go into you even on a summery day lol but id rather not risk it in this weather.in my punto iv kerbed the wheels as soon as i come off my drive .and i was gutted.rather not in the abi:).

haha once the snow has cleared up il be razzing around in it again :). iv done 3500 miles and about 3300 have been pointless driving around :). just hate this snow to avoid being wacked into or kerbing and sliding around . :)

I got my A500 at the end of jan this year and it snowed all of feb so i had to use it. although it coped better than i thought it might. However, due to all the other useless drivers around me i just happened
upon a subaru outback last month to see me through this winter and despite the severe boredom when driving it i made a good call there. (my stuck neighbours think so too!)
But, i miss the abarth, so i removed its snowmans outfit and cleared around it to make sure it would start etc, let it idle 4 a bit then alter the revs a bit too whilst running aircon etc. Didnt actually move the car though, its been sat parked in gear and handbrake off. Because its likely gonna be 2 and a bit months before my rural location defrosts then there was no way i could let it sit unattended throughout
to then have a potential host of troubles at once.
So, if i had to use it i would but until i see fair weather again, id rather not.
P.S. Whats a gritter?
