Torquing up wheels

Right I'm going to take the car up to the outlaws next week and use her big flat drive to take the wheels off to clean and seal them and the calipers,question is do I need to get a torque wrench to retighten the wheel nuts? Or will it be safe enough to do it with a normal wrench?

Best off using a torque wrench if you can. If you overtighten the lock nuts, getting them off again with the soft metal key is a nightmare.

As Martin says a torque wrench is best, but not essential. The Locking wheel nuts are badly designed
and can strip  if put on to tight.
Do you have the correct trolley jack to go under the car?

I got a halfords trolley jack and an ancient one my old Dad gave me which just get under which is why I'm going to the outlaws as her drive is flat,outside mine the road has a camber so I can't get the jack underneath, I think I'll shoot over to screwfix or tool station and grab a torque wrench they are about £25  be handy to have one I suppose

I got one from Halfords for just this job.  As a direct consequence I feel a bit more manly with it in the shed.  Get some brake piston pusher-inners next and you think you can do anything.

A set of King dick spanners is a must in any toolbox :P

Most trolley jacks are too tall to go under the sills, so a couple of short planks of wood (offcuts from kitchen worktop is ideal) can be a real help: simply drive onto them and you gain 2" of ground clearance.

88Nm is the correct torque setting for the bolts. This is less than you'd imagine.

I had to buy a 24" breaker bar to get my nuts off.  Did the job with ease and I now keep it in the boot in case I get a flatty.
It was only about £6 on Amazon and it's all shiny chrome.  Bargain.

90nm lock - 110nm normal
