Drilling Holes in the underside of the airbox.
« on: October 24, 2011, 12:19:25 PM »
Really? Im only looking to improve sound but surely this isn't amazingly safe? Seen a thread on here where he drilled a lot of holes on the underside of the airbox and on the sides. Would nothing get in there, like a stone or something and damage the turbo?

Please enlighten me : )

What do you think the chances are of a stone getting into the engine bay and finding its way through one of the tiny holes in the airbox? Also it's got a filter inside the box which should stop anything like that happening. Personally I would just buy an induction kit as the standard airfeed is not good.

You also don't want to be sucking warm air into the engine from the engine bay.

I did think that but... shut it!  ;D And I thought he drilled under the filter so debris could still get through. Anyway, it's the answer I was looking for. I wil get an induction kit one day when I have the dosh which at the moment, Is looking like never!  :thumbd:

On the thread this idea was on he stated it was better to suck warm air in than no air at all : P the recirc air cant be that cool afterall!

The filter sits in the bottom of the airbox so wouldnt make any odds really. Just depends if you like the look of an airbox with holes in it when you open the bonnet.

You risk ruining the aesthetics and making the car worse for negligible gain. Why bother? If you want more performance buy a proper mod solution.

The holes would be at the bottom of the airbox so you couldnt see them anyway  ;D

I am the one who did this to my evo. It's a free mod which improves sound and has little to no effect on performance.

I drilled the holes on the underside and on the left side of the box. If you study the box you will not be sucking in any extra hot air at these points. There is a funnel at the front of the box which is the only intake from the grill. The holes that I drilled are placed as to capture the air that the funnel is unable to reach. I made no holes on the engine side or top of the box.

The extra heat soak you would experience from sitting in a trafic jam would be minimal. All holes drilled were below the filter (I'm not a retard) so there is no chance of anything getting into the engine.

I don't get how people criticise a mod like this and then go and fit an open cone which will be hot air's best friend. Even the K&N kits with the heat shield only shield two sides of the cone!

This is essentially a free ten minute mod which will enhance the sound of your car with no negative effects.

I don't think anyone really criticised It or said they had fitted an open cone filter, so don't know who or what you are arguing with  ???

Although I did have a one off carbon Fibre ITG one on mine that did seem to make a fair amount of difference to performance but not much noise from it. Which I prefer.

Thanks for the tip. I think I'll do the same with my Monza :thumb:

When I get my drill out I just can't stop. What else could I improve ???

Have you tried drilling your tyres? There's no improvement in performance, in fact it actaully has a negative effect, but the noise is spectacular once they've deflated. The sparks are quite dramatic too.

Seeing as every one has a drill to hand does any one want to cut some holes in my bonnet to fit my Assetto Corse vents?
