Frozen gearbox
« on: February 02, 2012, 10:41:54 AM »
I know this was brought up last year sometime but I'm on my phone so can't use the search function easily enough to find it.

Just gone out to start my car and the gearbox is really REALLY stiff ???
I've never had this happen to me, no matter how cold it got last year.

So is it just the cold or could it be something worse?

If you run the engine for a bit to warm up (out of gear), does it free up?

When was your gearbox oil last changed?

There was a problem with the Smart gearbox when I had the Roadster, in the winter if your gearbox oil was past it the boxes would seize slightly

I just put the clutch in and changed gear numerous times to do it. Still a little stuff but the engines running outside so fingers crossed.

I had the oil wtc changed last month but not sure about the gearbox oil tbh, probs close to a year ago.

Won't be the gearbox oil, perhaps the shielding on gear selector cable is broken/ gone stiff therefore not covering cable and you are experiencing issues with frozen cable due to moisture ingress bit like what can happen with the handbrake cable?

Perhaps time for new cables before they snap and leave you stranded, or take a look and if no corrosion get some oil in there should impede freezing, maybe?

used to get this on my old punto, i know its a different linkage but the old one had a bush which got moisture in it and pitted the metal surface. it would then  get stiffer and stiffer until it was replaced or cleaned off :thumb:

My gearbox felt a bit stiff this morning too. I blamed it on the cold (-4).
