I need a spare wheel and tyre
« on: October 16, 2009, 12:23:25 AM »
Hi folks,

I want a spare wheel.  And it's got to be a proper alloy wheel, not some 16" steel stuff which some dealer suggested to me.  In case of a tyre blowout that bit of foam in the can which comes with the GPA is not going to do much for me.  Besides, the can contents go off after 3 years max.  Asking at a nearby FIAT garage I was quoted £285 for the alloy wheel.  I get the Pirelli nero tyre for £80 at my favourite tyre shop.

Has anyone else asked for a spare wheel and come across a cheaper price, please?

Thanks
Carol

Any special reason for it being a full size alloy spare? I can understand wanting a wheel in place of the Pump&Go kit for the reason you mentioned. But would a space saver not suffice? I would need to check - but I suspect a full size wheel most likely won't fit in the boot.

It will fit just fine (in the boot).  And I want a proper spare wheel.  I drove on the space saver once on the M4 in my Punto Sporting.  50 mph tops and there was no handling, no road holding and it was plainly embarrassing.  All the trucks overtook me.  Never again.  I've always had a full size spare since then.  I do look after my tyres but sometimes there is crap on the road which cuts a tyre to pieces.  If you can get me a quote, I can give you the number of the wheels I have on right now.

Cheers
Carol

you could always stick an advert in our classifieds , some people when they upgrade to the SS have been selling there wheels and a lot have been going quite cheap!

Has anyone tried removing the boot lining to see if a spare wheel will actually fit in the well?

In my Civic Type R days the spacesaver spare only fitted the rear because of brake clearance issues, would the same not stand because of the Brembo calipers ,an experiment needs to be done perhaps to find a definite answer

If you let some air out it would. Other wise it sticks up by an inch or two.

If you let the air out, will this not deform the tire?

You'd also have a flat spare.................

I'm not sure tbh. You need the smallest amount of room to just slot it in. It was just the outer line of tred on the tyre that stops it going in. Maybe i could have forced it but i didn't want it to get stuck  I was just testing if it was possible.

You'd also have a flat spare.................

You would need to have a little tyre inflator. Not suggesting you drive with a flat ;D They're only small and you could leave it in the boot.

Not sure if this helps Carol but this is the best i could fit it in. There is still room under the wheel for it to go lower. But like i say.. the outer line of tyre tred just stops it. If it was a cm wider it would plop straight in!

How about trying a tyre with only a couple of mm left, would that make enough difference?

Or how about safari style and bolt it to the bonnet  ;D

Hey, I got a big boot, it does not have to fit underneath.  I can secure it in the boot, preventing it from rolling around when I take corners and roundabouts ;D
I've had to tyre blow outs, one on the M4, going fast, and one in a roundabout doing about 40 mph (both in my Punto Sporting), when I went too far left and hit the kerb to avoid an accident by somebody pulling over on me from the right. It's no good, unless you have a spare tyre in the boot. I'll check with Thames Fiat when I take my GPA to service in November.

I've had a puncture and used the goo.  It's a PITA but bad luck.  I have no urge to cart a spare around.

Has anyone found a suitable space saver spare that would fit in the wheel well?
