No Steering Lock...
« on: February 04, 2010, 08:19:48 PM »
Hi, just drove home and parked outside and on turning the ignition off i went to lock the steering wheel but it didn't lock in place and instead just got heavier to turn as the power steering system disengaged.

I tried to turn the ignition on and off a few times and each time tried to find the steering lock position but to no avail.

I was wondering if anyone else had experienced this before and if it rectifies itself after a short drive or a battery disconnect ?

Thanks in advance.

Chris

Lock it quickly. If you don't and the PS disengages, it is much harder to make it lock. It depends which way your wheels are pointing as to how easily/quickly it locks I find. If you have full lock on when you park (which you shouldn't btw - I was once told) and manage to get the steering lock on, when you come to start the car it's a right bugger to unlock!

Cheers for the advice Joe but the wheels are straight and I am not doing anything different to what I normally do. It usually just takes a slight turn to the right and the steering locks. But I am now able to turn the wheel in almost a complete rotation (I know this isn't good for the tyres) before the PS disengages and there is no sign of the steering lock kicking in. Eventually as mentioned the steering just gets heavy and I am resigned to leaving the car with the lock off. I know this isn't a major problem for most people but iv always let my steering wheel lock when I leave my car so its a bit annoying!

I didn't think the car had a steering lock as it never locks when the wheel is central, but the other day while i was moving the car about in my garage (moving it by hand, pushing & pullin it) I pulled hard to the right on the steering (while pushing the door pillar not on the steering wheel) & 'click' it locked, bit of a sod as i'd left my keys in the house. It's done it a couple of other times since but the steering is never central when it does lock.

No that's right, from my experience you've always had to turn the wheel to about 10 or 2 o' clock to activate the lock but the problem is that it is not happening anymore!

Know it sounds a little ham-fisted but you tried giving the wheel/steering column a lil clout, ya know, if in doubt n all that  :D

Sounds like a definite fault to me, Chris.  Time for a trip to the dealer I'm afraid.
