With all this squeaking are you sure you just haven't been infested with mice?

Sorry, couldn't help it :-[

cheers for that. only noticed this morning when i was de-icing, never normally run the car and stand outside it so it might have always been there...

Hi all,
Don't want to alarm anyone unnecessarily but a word of warning ref. alternator belt - mine shredded itself on Monday which left me stranded on the M6 for 3+ hours (but thats another story). Eventually got to Research & apparently other Punto owners have experienced the same (same alt. unit).

Suspision is pointing to frozen alternators, which free up on starting but the damage is done to the belt. By my experience you have max. 15 miles before your battery runs out of juice (not nice in this weather).

My advice is to ensure in this weather that if you clear snow/ice from your windscreen that you run the car long enough to dry any draining water that reaches though to the engine bay, otherwise it will re-freeze. Also watch out for any slow cranks, could be a sign - I took it to just be the cold acting on the battery charge.  :-[

There is now a modification out for this problem, it consists of a new belt being fitted and a water drain to deflect water from filling your alternator and freezing. Might be in for a wait to have it solved as many dealers will be requesting belts and modification kits.

The MiTo i have at the mo with the same 155 HP engine and 6 speed box as the GPA also has an embarrassing chattering squeak too, doesn't seem to go either but can only hear it at low revs at low speed. It also has the screechy brakes too, but I'm not bothered because it's not mine!  :D

This is a common problem on MiTo too see this thread http://www.alfaowner.com/Forum/alfa-mito-and-giulietta/201767-beware-mito-owners-freezing-weather-causing-belt-failures.html

easy fix seems to be to order a longer drain tube so that the water doesnt drip onto alternator.
They laugh at us because we are different, We pity them because they are all the same.

Just typical of the dealer which does not suprise me, They dont fill me with confidence at all!

But thats what i get for buying an abarth that limits which dealers you can take it too  ::)

after reading this i asked my head tech who is also my abarth man :D to look into it for me yes a fix has been released but only for the alt belt not the timing belt problem the drain pipe is to to stop the alternator freezin up and the alt belt being affected but not the timing belt as this is a cased unit and the fix has only been released for the standard punto and evo nothing is mentioned for the abarth but us abarth lovers help as often as we can

i hope this clears it up
