Whining when moving.
« on: September 28, 2011, 03:55:15 PM »
Now I apologise now for my poor explanation skills. When driving I can hear a moderately load whining ( electrical sound ) Not turbo, and Im thinking its the alternator? Gets higher pitched with higher revvs and vice versa.

Im hoping that Im going to get an answer of ' it's fine ,everyones oes it' but I don't think that will be the case unfortunately.

other info.. Does it hot or cold. From turning it on to turning it off. But cant hear it when idling.

If I've missed anything out ask me  :thumb:

Does it change pitch alot or slightly? Mine was only slightly higher pitched at higher revs. Unfortunately mine turned out to be the gearbox :(

Try taking it out of gear while moving on private road obviuosly  ;) and see if the noise still happens even try revving it slightly.

I'm sure I get a sound as you have described but I get it when I put my a/c on.
I don't hear the sound when it is idling just when I'm driving. It's always been like that and car has been fine.

No air con is on. And still does it when out of gear. Say take it out of gear and slowing to a stop

Belt to the compressor is always moving...  What turns the pump on is an electronic clutch on the shaft, this is what seems to go.

I had exactly the same thing happen on my Fiat Grande Punto Sporting and it was replaced under the 3rd year warranty..  Which is a good thing too as they cost £670 new!!

"A high pitched whining noise you say; I only hear it when my girlfriend is in the car" - Can't believe know one has said it yet!!!  :D

I've had a problem with one of the auxiliary belts whining. That changed pitch with the revs. The garage tightened it up and not had a problem since?

Interesting. I shall have to get it checked. Doesnt sound like a belt though. This will sound stupid but it reminds me of the sound the washing machine when it stops  ::)

Does sound very similar to mine from what your saying. After I found out mine was the gearbox I did some searching on the net and apparently it's quite common on the m32 gearbox for the bearings to whine. Vauxhall have had issues with it for years  :thumbd:

I hope it's not the gearbox though.

But for it to still make the sound out of gear?

I'm not too sure but yours seems to be the same as mine and mine had to have a gearbox then the whine disappeared.

I honestly don't know what the issue actually was I asked but the people behind the desk they didn't seem to know and apparently the techs were too busy  :thumbd:

To my surprise it was done under warranty. although I did have to chase it up with Abarth uk as after a month I still hadn't heard what was done. if anything.
