Howdy,

Thought I'd pop on and say hello.

We're picking up our A500 this Saturday from Research. We only decided one week ago to definately buy the car, having nearly gone through with ordering a 1.4 Sport.

However having decided that it was an Abarth we wanted, a phone call placed to almost every dealer in the UK resulted in us unearthing a car to the perfect spec - Black, Red Stripe/Mirrors, Red Leather, Petals - in Research.

Ben and Ian there couldn't have been more helpful and tomorrow morning we point the old rust bucket MX-5 south from Aberdeen and after a stop off in Leeds we'll swap it for a brand spanking new 500 on Saturday.

Pinch me, I must be dreaming.

Love this site by the way - it played a big part in our decision to go for the Abarth. Everyone on the main 500 fourm is raving about the standard cars, but the posts I read here made me realise that the Abarth is the best option.

Cheers All!

Thanks for the welcome everyone.

The drive shouldn't be too bad as we're staying with family in Leeds over the weekend.

Only problem might be tomorrow when we find out if the MX-5 still has a working hood - the hardtop has been on it constantly for the last year and last time we checked the hood it was looking like it was on it's last legs.

I have a feeling that most people chopping in MX-5s are in the same boat as us. We bought this beautiful looking jet black sports car about 4 years ago only to discover a year later that it consisted of 75% filler covering the rust which forms just about everywhere on them. At this point the hardtop is probably worth more than the actual car.

I'm just glad that we found the car at Research - the only other one of this spec was in Vospers I think, now that would have been a drive and a half.

Hi there spec is nearly same as mine except I have gone for 10 spokes!

I'm chopping my mk2 mx5 in. Even though it's just passed it's mot without issue. In the next 6 months I'm due disks, pads, cambelt, 4 tyres, service which comes to just over 1k. Car is only just worth over 2k so make financial sense to use scrappage scheme!

Ha! The irony of this situation is not lost on me. My mum had an old rust bucket Uno years ago and thinks we're mad chopping in the MX-5 for a Fiat, though I reckon she'll change her mind once she's seen it and I've taken her out for a blast.

To be honest I was considering stripping the Mazda down and replacing wings and sills as they are all available at reasonable prices, but we'd probably have been looking at £4k minimum to do the work not to mention the time it would have taken.

Luckily my fair lady, who owns the Mazda, saw a standard 500 one day and fell in love, so persuading her we needed an Abarth was no effort at all!

I told a little white lie when I said the car at Research was our exact spec - they actually had one with 10 spokes, but agreed to swap them for the Petals.

I love the looks of the 10 spokes as well, they remind me of old school BBS racing wheels, but in the end we both preferred the Petals.

When do you get yours? Also - know anyone looking to purchase a black hardtop for a mk1/2 MX-5?

Hard tops at this time of the year will sell quite easily. Try on MX5OC or MX5 Nutz.

Mine (when i ordered) was a Stage 10 car which i changed from White to black. So should be due first few weeks of Jan i suspect

Woooooooooooooooooooooo Hooooooooooooooooooooooo!

Just a quickie to say all went well today and we have the car now.

As you might have guessed, I'm a wee bit excited (and I've only had it on the motorway so far).

Still worried that this is all a dream. If it's not, I'll get the photos up in a couple of days.

One more time.....

Woooooooooooooooooooooo Hooooooooooooooooooooooo!

PS - A big thanks to Ben, Ian and all at Research for making our first new car purchase such an enjoyable experience.
