Back, last  bank holiday monday..the 5th, i was driving in to work....middle of the day. i had been asked at the last minute to cover for peeps gone off sick...noro virus on the ward!!!..i was driving quite quick (speed limit allowing!)...as the shift had already started.   i caught up with an old golf, followed at a polite distance for approx a mile, then when safe...ie a long sweeping right hand bend.....no cars about, dry, sunny, 2 wide lanes....whites lines down the middle... put my foot down to overtake. i had just got almost level, when from nowhere to guy suddenly pulled right across into me......i had no where to go, no time to take defensive action, he drove straight into the side of the car, forcing me off the road.... onto a grassy area that was very undulated with big humps....at this point i thought i was going to die......the car hit a hump and seemed to take off. i was flung violently about within the car...and was just terrified, waiting for the pain....i must have been trying to turn the wheel to the left, as the car suddenly veered back onto the road...narrowly missing a huge gully at right angles to the road....it careered across the road....and flew into a deep wide ditch, thigh deep in water. the nose of the car hit the opposite bank. i felt a massive punch to my face, as it hit the screen, breaking it, just as the airbags went off pushing me back. I sat stunned for a few moments, then realised that the car was filling with smoke and i was breathing it in..... i knew i had to get out.  i had a moment of elation when i realised that i had no serious injury, and was able to move 'everything'...the car had ended up on its side in the ditch, drivers side under water, so passenger door was above me.... the smoke was getting quite thick....i knew i had to get out.... the seat belt opened no problem, and the passenger door opened easily. i managed to climb out......wade through the water...in my nurses dress.
Luckily, one of the first to stop, were two off duty police officers. As soon as they realised i had been victim of hit and run, they called the police, who turned up very quickly. In the meantime, the ba*tard who hit me, had tried to abandoned his vehical about a mile down the road. He had dumped it on a garage forecourt, threw the keys in a hedge and ran. The garage owner had witnessed this, and drove after him, and made him come back and take the car. But got the number plate and description.

My God what an experience for you, it must have been very scary!

The most important thing is that you were not seriously injured.

Thought you were going to say he pulled across you to avoid something, what kind of person does something like that deliberately?

the garage owner, drove back up the road, and gave police the number. They were brilliant, and worked fast to find this guy. To cut along story short, he has been arrested, and charged with driving without a liscence, driving without insurance, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to report an accident. He was also charged by a different police authority, who wanted him for a similar set of offenses. Unfortunately they cant charge him for dangerous driving, as there were no witnesses, and of course, he's never going to admit to doing what he did.

Estimate on my car is over 14 thousand, so just waiting for the insurance assessors to see it now. It will be a write off i think.
I really feel that i owe my life to the car.... it kept its feet, and i feel that it protected me, and delivered me safely. really i shouldn't have walked away from that.

He sounds like a right scumbag.

It will be a write off at that cost, I'd say.

Good to see it protected you though, it could have been so much worse.

Surely they can charge him with some form of assualt and there will be evidence of that where the crash occurred - debris on the wrong side of road, skid marks etc.

As I said glad you are okay.

Hope not to pry but you mentioned smoke - do you know the source of that and did it end up actally alight ?

I think activation of airbag gives off smoke.

So glad you are OK. Hope the scumbag gets what he deserves.

Thats horrible, I'm glad that you are OK but you must have been terrified.

That guy sounds like he has done something similar before, I really hope he gets the maximum sentence.

Its such a shame about the car though.

That was a very good description of the accident, half way through I thought you were going to say just kidding and you read it in a novel, Ive been in a few crashes and they do seem to happen in slow motion and you can remember every detail.  Glad youre ok, sounds like a lucky escape.

Cars certainly going to be a write off at that price, which is a good thing as they never feel the same accident repaired.

Perhaps this is your excuse to order an Abarth 500c?Huh??

Poor Potty thank goodness you're ok, terrible news about the car and I hope after that little performance you'll stick with us and go through the pain of getting another. We could do with a hug icon for these moments.

Considering the events described I say you are very very lucky that you could walk away! You certainly will be stiff for the next few days. Glad that you are Ok and could walk away.

The smoke would be the airbags deployment. They are set of by an explosive charge. I know mine in the BMW went off when I ran into someone.
