Your appraisal of the Nurburgring is good. I am not sure about it being bumpy, perhaps this last winter did not do it any favours. I have been many times, but never have I driven it in the wet.

Bumpy was probably the wrong description - its the camber changes and steepness of the track in places that was most surprising.

The camber changes must be interesting on a motorbike they were bad enough in the abarth!

The only really bumpy bit is Karussell. We went 'in' on a couple of laps for a laugh but honestly someone could have driven round the outside faster!

Our laps were nothing like this....... one of the best ring videos

All good fun.

Is it weird that people rave about the Nurburgring, and yet I've never been tempted to go? Doesn't interest me in the slightest but i don't know why? Think I'm "track shy"  ???

It is not for everyone, but if you ever get an opportunity, have a look in.

If i had only seen the various top gear episodes and seen and heard about the various 'stag' trips to the ring etc i too would have been put off.

I guess it is the uniqueness and history together with videos like the Stefan Roser Ruf ctr video that make is special to me

I doubt i will go back for a long time, if ever, but, i'm pleased i experienced it for myself.

Stefan's lap was more for the video with plenty of tyre smoking oversteer, rather than a quick time.

Comment about the Nordschliefe.

Just make sure you have insurance coverage when you go out there. Not for the fact that you may damage your car, but for the potential damage you may do to a biker or if you need to recovered to a hospital by air as you we involved in an accident.

Most Brits will not be covered as it is specifically excluded in the policies. I am lucky in Lux we are fully covered.

It is a fantastic road. I have done about 500 laps now (in various cars). If you get the chance do it. But do not gamble with it. It is narrow and it can bite you. The Abarth is a great car around the ring. I would suggest a dedicated track day if you do not have insurance. That way you are only going to have to worry about your losses and maybe a bit of Armco in the worst case scenario.

Also in relation to stickers... bad form to put them on a car that has not been round.

GREAT trip report BTW. Really enjoyed it

Wow verygood pictures! What was the stelvio like? Was it hard to organise the trip? I only ask cos my sister lives in the algarve and i've never been out there (i'm not one for flying) so was thinking road trip, bearing in mind i've never driven outside the uk!  ???

The Algarve is a long way from the Stelvio - that would be a road trip.

Ive wanted to do this for ages and Ive been thinking more about it this year for two main reasons 1) Buyin my first new car and 2) I'll be 30 this xmas and really fancied fullfilling both new car and european roadtrip by the time I was 30.

Would love to go in a small group of cars but sadlly non of my mates are that in their cars/driving and not sure Id want to tackle it on my own, not sure the missis would be up for it neither.

Thanks for posting some excellent pic's and a very good write up on the jorney
