I need some help from fellow abarthisti..

Currently I am driving to work, which is a round trip of about 40miles, 5 days a week. So I thought maybe I should catch a train to work instead. Here are the pro's and con's, so please let me know what you would do if you were in this position.

Pro's -
Mileage on the car would drop considerably.
Less stone chips from motorway driving.
Save about £40 (max) a month.
Instead of a paid for car park permit from work, I will be able to opt for private health care.

Con's -
My car will be on the seafront more often, therefore being attacked by salt. Thumb Down (This is the one giving me the most grief)
I won't drive my baby as much. Cry

You have an 8 year anti perforation warranty on the car so I wouldn't worry about the salt.

During school time, by car I would have to leave before 8am to get to work for 9am, and by train I would need to leave at 7:40-7:45am to get the train at 8am. So there isn't really much time difference between the two.

i think train then. as its a heck of a lot of mileage youl be clocking up, for the sake of 15 mins extra and maby a few pounds more itl keep your cars mileage lower and then something to look forward to for when your coming back from work and the weekends Smiley. i use my punto for work.i think id get bored of the 500 if i took it to work and back as it would just be like a everyday car.i like to keep the special  feeling of having it as a "night out and weekend car" Smiley.

Do I? I will have to look at my paperwork. Does that cover "natural" occurrences then? Apologies if I sound blonde but only asking as e.g if your house gets flooded from heavy rain, insurance companies don't cover the cost.

That's what I was thinking, as it is sad to say that I am kinda feeling that way about my car recently Shocked Cry

Your anti perforation warranty covers the body from rust for 8 years.
It must have an inspection at the relevant service intervals and wont cover any part of the body that has been damaged.
In other words if you catch the sill on a low wall and then it rusts it wont be covered Thumb Up

I used to take the train almost everywhere. Then I bought Milo and I've managed 8500 miles in less than 4 months but I just can't help driving him......I must get back to the train soon though. So, you have my sympathies on the dilema.  Roll Eyes

I hate trains with a vengeance but to be fair, the real issue is the London Underground. I started a new job near Southwark bridge back in July. 45-50 minutes to Marylebone was OK-ish, but the same again on the sauna tube packed in like sardines? I lasted 3 weeks and bought a motorbike. Saves at least 30 minutes daily, some days more like 45 minutes - and more if I had missed the train home I was aiming for (happened about twice a week due to tube delays)

Borrowed my brother's scooter for teh frist couple of weeks, that was costing me £6/day rather than £18+ by train, but as I said to the wife, the scooter is free and one of my own wouldn't be

Still reckon the break even point is around 15/18 months depending on service costs but the bike will still have more value than a bunch of used train tickets - and I gain 3-4 hours a week more with my family

The A500 has suddenly gone from 300 miles/week on average to barely any as it now only gets used some weekends

Use the car, it's what you bought it for. I can walk to work if i want, but instead i take a "long" way to work (well, 3.5 miles!) just so i can drive the car. The other 20 odd thousand miles have all been pleasure miles  Thumb Up

And the salt, the body may not rot, but my mate used to work at a garage near the sea. The rust on everything but the body, especially the brakes/exhaust, was shocking on some cars just a few months old!

How about alternating between the two every month in winter and bike/ scooter to work in the summer?

I motorbike in the summer, the downside is like this morning, lovely day, full tank, sandwiches in the top box, Yorkshire Dales calling. Nearly never made it to work.

Hey, car:  driving great Italian car on motorway: Lot's of fun. Listening to the music you like. Great.  Making sure your Italian car actually gets  up to operating temp doing 40 miles?  Granted.  Train:  being stuck between a rock and a hard place:  yes, breathing people's sweaty armpits while standing in the compartment, oh yeah.  Making sure you can read a fun magazine instead of driving: definitely.  But for my cars the 90 miles commute a day down the M4 is bliss.  My cars (and myself) love going the distance.  Train is hassle, train means standing, being cramped in with other people.  And train is very expensive compared to car, even refuelling with VPower.
