Couldn't agree more.   My kids are 3 and 5 and our 'family' cars are the A500, a BMW 1 Series Coupe and an old Saab convertible.   The 1 series forum is full of parents swapping them for X5s as well.   ::)

Personally I reckon a smallish car supplemented by a roofbox/trailer/whatever is far more sensible as 90% of the time you don't need the space.

That said - the biggest issue is the size of children's car seats these days.  I'm quite short, so no problem for me, but if you're tall it can be a struggle trying to find a car you can fit the child seat in and still get the drivers seat back.   Being 5 foot 9 sometimes has its advantages!

5 foot 9 is not short , I'd say it was perfect ! I'm a fellow 5' 9er. Have a Saab Aero convertible, use both cars to cart the clan about and never have a problem. Went camping in the A500 the other weekend. Two step boys are both 6 foot plus and they love coming out in the car. :thumb:

personally i think one child is not enough to facilitate the purchase of a great big monster of a 4x4.  however if you have the dollar then why not.  im 24 with a one year old boy.  prior to my A500 i had an octavia vrs which was great but lacked character and threw up bills i could no longer afford.  however having 4 doors to get him in and out the car in his carry cot was ideal.  however now he's on his feet, i just use a maxi cosi isofix seat suitable up to 3 years and it fits perfectly in the a500.

one great thing i like about the a500 is the fact that when you open the huge doors, literally one step and your in the back.  with it being so short its ideal to actually stand one footed in the car and get him in and back out again. with no kids on the agenda for at least another 3 years, this fantastic little car should see me through perfectly  (he says with crossed fingers looking skywards!)

I'm 6 foot 2 and I dont fit in a 500 with the sunroof Propperly as the roof is a bit lower even with the seat on the floor.

but I have managed to get two kids in the back of the AGP no need at all for a bigger car.

Some of the marketing for the Chelsea tractors, is very orientated to safety and also safety angst.

Face it you never feel like that is more of a priority than when bringing home your first-born. The next big one is taking junior to school so you can see why so many fill the school runs.

Cars like a range rover are marketed very well as "the only car you'll ever need", so for many people I guess the 4x4 is bought with it's "all rounder capability"

Personally I don't get the whole TONKA toy thing and i think the increase in impact risk on other car users is almost a moral issue but then like many on here I like to drive, not HGV drive.

Calling all cayenne/Q7/ X5 owners what factors drive the purchase both emotion or reason?

I dont own any of these chelsea tractors but my parents do, the new Q7 infact. Overall I think its a lovely car, the spec is un-real and the road presence is something that just doesnt tire. The reason they have it is simple, we had a jet bike, with 6 of us (me mum dad sister my girlfriend and my sisters fiance) were all able to fit in it when taking it out, including all the gear, would you be able to get this out of an A500 or AGP? No.

I can see why people buy these things, they look good IMO, they give you a sense of comfort and safety and you get the looks that you just dont get in another car (good and bad) so if you have the money why not?!

My sister has her car, my mum has hers and my dad has his, my mum wanted something big, so thats what she got! Speaking of which, the Q7 is currently up for sale as she now wants something smaller- A BMW 1M, I am majorly excited!! :thumb:

The issue with SUVs is that they're just wasteful.  Higher car = increased fuel consumption model for model.  They put other road users at increased risk and are generally completely unsuited to off-road use (wrong tyres usually)

People can buy what they want, but however wealthy I was, I wouldn't want to give the impression of conspicuous waste.

I have AGP, hubby has 7 seater Volvo XC90. His parents come every year and stay for a month. So we do need a 7 seater (we have 2 kids as well). BUT it is his car and his choice (I wanted much more cooler Mazda 5)
