The Yanks seem to have it sussed: the trucks all drive faster than everyone else.

Amen to that. Also the more sensible idea of just having lanes rather than over taking lanes like we do  (If more people remembered that fact the m-ways would be better) although the 4 lane exit swerve still scares the life out of me every time I see one  :o

;D Ah Richardmajor, lack of traffic on the Autobahn:  did you know that they only ever give you traffic jams more than 2 km in length in Germany on the traffic news?  Anything below that is too little to mention. What I would say:  Increase the blooming speed limit in this country so that everybody knows that when a fast car comes along you move.  And move quickly.  And indicate.  But hey, I noticed that when I go left at speed on the M4 quite a few people follow.  Perhaps they just did not realise they were hogging a lane.  To my mind, nothing beats a motorway with traffic sticking to the left and to the middle and the outside lane is clear to overtake. It is such a beautiful sight and such a feeling of respect for the other drivers out there.

I love Germany, Germans (say it quietly and German cars) and most of all I love driving on the motorways there..... BUT to say they arent crowded is a laugh.

Every time I have ever driven over there - more times than I can recall to be honest - the autobahns were always packed, and when you do get a clear stretch sods law says you always get something WAY quicker than you in your rearview mirror in about 60secs flat.

On the subject of the M25 (and British driving in general) its rubbish. There are WAY TOO MANY cars on all our roads, and far too many people who have no idea at all how to drive on quick roads - maybe because its not something we teach learners, which is nuts.

I tend to disagree.  Not too many cars on UK roads, but too many who hog the middle and the fast lane. I scare them daily!  Or undertake, if nothing else works,  And yes,  Autobahns are crowded, but when you see someone come up to you at 160 mph you move over, no?  That's what is happening in the UK mostly, but not always.  From what I heard at work, idiots don't even know what the rear view mirror is for.  Me, being German, I love seeing a fast car come up at me and moving out of the way.  Rather than hogging the fast lane - which is in fact illegal - and make people undertake, as I would, if I need to.

Autobahns are best experienced on Sundays, when the trucks are not allowed, and Trucker A doing 95kph does not pull out to overtake Trucker B doing 90kph as you approach at 200 kph...

Sigh, too many Autobahns are still 2 lanes only which means trucks - but no trucks at weekends - yay.,  Sigh.  At least my M4 is 3 lanes and mostly - MOSTLY - lane hoggers get my message.  I can't help it, hogging the fast lane is the worst insult you can do to me on a daily basis. Thursdays - eg. today @ around 4.00 - 4.30 pm are always terrible.  But then there is always an empy left lane.  How lucky I am to see and use it.
