Can normal gatsos flash you from the front???

Just driven towards one and it flashed my other half but was only doing 33 in a 30.

Front ones don't no, if they face front of car they use infrared 'flash'

Yes the infra ones do you fron the front, theres one on the A3 putney/roehampton end by the Asda outside harlequins rugby clubs training ground, richardson evans.

There are a number of different types of speed camera.

Gatso are (were?) the most common, and they tend to photograph from behind, but the Truvelo that you find around Portsmouth and in Warwickshire are definitely forward facing ones.

A significant percentage of the Uk's fixed cameras have now been converted to digital. and for these there is no flash, and no need to keep refreeshing the film. First you will know, I'm told, is when the letter arrives advising of your opportunity to make an unsolicited donation to a local "charity".

Ocassionally can pick traffic up on the other side of the road and go off, very rare though

Yes. I've seen the one on the bottom of the M4 elevated section where there is a 40 mph inbound be triggered by stuff heading out of London. However, as the Gatso works by taking 2 photos a known time interval apart and calculating speed from the distance travelled between the 2 photos (hence the markings on the road), then I don't think triggering one front on will incriminate you unless others know differently.

Whatever.  Stupid idiots on the M4 saw police car, braked haphazardly and put me in danger.  Not me, mind, Scorpi.  You bleedin hippocrates.  (oops, mind profanity filter).  Just go, ffs. don't brake from 80 to 60 because of a police car, that's dangerous driving to me.  Don't brake unless you have to, just take foot off gas.  Grrr :thumbd:
