Sudden, unexpected braking
« on: June 11, 2011, 09:43:00 PM »
Ha, one of my favourite NoNos. Don't brake on a motorway or the Autobahn unless you absolutely have to.  When leaving the motorway, the slip road is there for braking, you don't do it on the road.  However, some lane hogger suddenly spots a traffic officer and fully hits the brakes on the fast lane.  Is that decent or is that dangerous driving? I probably don't have to point out that sudden braking without any good reason is dangerous driving to me, just look ahead and take foot off gas.

Agree. You should never have to touch the brakes if you plan ahead and the road is idiot free. Lane 3 straight onto off slip and anchor on at the top  :thumb:

Sudden unnecessary braking is bad news, but it's ultimately the responsibility of the driver behind to be maintaining sufficient distance to react.  Most don't.

I'd also suggest lifting off has its issues - if you've got people behind you (particularly tailgating idiots as above!) better to brush the brakes as you lift off just so the guy behind sees your brakelights.   Easy to not notice someone in front slowing from 70 to 50 say on engine braking alone...

I like to assume many cars on a free moving motorway suddenly braking in the distance is a dead giveaway for a police car or camera or speed trap  ;D

Just as well Abarth cars have good brakes.  I am seeing the sudden brakers every day and have enough distance to just lift off.  It's rare that I have to step on the brakes, but if I need to they work, or I just change lanes.  Do that where I am from and you get done.  Braking without a good reason on the Autobahn is a punishable offence.

I had some guy in an M5 slam on in front of me several times on the A1 earlier, I got so fed up I actually commited one of my pet hates and undertook him, which he didn't like. It was cat and mouse unnecessarily for miles - I just wanted to cruise home! Anyway, I annihilated him on a two lane slip road onto the M62.

Today's lesson: My 500 is now more composed around corners at high speed than an M5  8)

I meet the holes every day.  If the left is free that's my way.
