Suggestions for a boring car
« on: January 20, 2012, 06:45:49 PM »
Ok since Chris pranged my Abarth it has been decided that we need a boring motorway car. My soul is running out of my ear already looking at the choices which seem to run to a mazda 6 or a volvo s40/v50.

So 50mpg combined, sub 10 second 0-60, preferably hatchback/small estate with xenons, absolutely no rear wheel drive/fords and about 10 grand at 2-4 years old. Any suggestions?

I would have said a 1 series but RWD.

I might opt for the bus in preference..... ;D

We had a Octavia VRS in bright yellow as a company car for a couple of years - cracking car but too fuel hungry. Although we could probably go for a lower spec.

When it snows you see BMWs dumped everywhere. Not good :)

Alfa 159 1.9L JTDM TI spec'd... Should be high 40's for MPG and far from boring to look at.  :thumb:

Can pick up good mileage on an '08 plate for around the 10k mark.

There is nothing that makes a rwd car manageable in the snow  :thumbd:

Like Mr Trooper, I'd recommend the Skoda Octavia. I've driven a few different diesel ones and they just get better and better......  only the vRS is probably going to be "fun", but the other ones will hit every button for you inc the 50 mpg goal.

Alfa 159 is nice (very nice)....... for that matter so would be a 147 JTD or even an Alfa GT JTDm.

The previous generation Mondeo in 2.2 ST TDCi format was deeply impressive, too. They will be getting a bit high mileage, now, but they seem quite tough and well built. Hertz used to run these and they were my favourite of the "ordinary" rental cars at the time (2006/7).

Those auto snow socks work, seen it first hand on a BMW 3 series coupe, so all is not lost with a rwd ;)

It hasn't snowed this year, abs winter tyres make your summer tyres last twice as long...

1 series (despite the looks) is a good shout.

Octavia, Passat, A4...
24 Heures du Mans 2012... 22 days to go!

Interesting that a tyre for an Alfa 159 1.9 TI costs £330. Per corner  :o
We've just had a whole set put on. Yikes. It has the same tyres as the Aston Martin DB9.

Have I suddenly become a tyre bore  ???

Could not recommend one to a friend especially a used one  :o
Tyres are stupid prices and won't last long either    :thumbd:
