500 Bulbs
« on: January 26, 2009, 08:46:46 pm »
I HAVE SPLIT THIS DISCUSSION FROM THE STICKY AT THE TOP OF THE PAGE AND INCLUDED MY ORIGINAL POST AS A QUOTE IN THIS MESSAGE  :thumb:

A word of warning folks:

I have just (tried) to upgrade the front bulbs for my 500.

First of all the warning - you CANNOT change the main beam bulbs by yourself.  Access for the main beam is the same as for the regular 500 (i.e. in the wheel arch).  Following the manual you put the steering on full lock, open the access hatch and then unclip the bulb from the metal clips and exchange.
It is possible (just) to get at the bulb, but unclipping and replacing the bulb is impossible due to the size of the wheels and lower ride height.  I imagine this process is just possible on smaller wheeled 500 variants, but you can forget it with the A500.

The only way to get good enough access is to jack the car and lower/remove the wheel.  This is a dealer only job due to a) the 500 doesnt come with a jack and b) it specifically states in the manual that only the dealer should raise the car due to the side skirts fouling the normal jack points.

During my intrepid investigations yesterday I managed to get one clip off the first bulb and then couldnt get any further (after struggling for 45 mins gave up with bloodied wrists).  I couldnt even get the clip back on, resulting in a trip to the dealer today to relieve me of 55euro to put it right.

If you plan on upgrading the Main Beam bulbs I suggest you make sure you have access to a ramp/friendly dealer or do it a time when the front wheels will be off anyway (esseesse fitting!)

On a more positive note I have changed the Dipped Beam to Philips +80% X-treme power and the difference is dramatic.  They are also very easy to fit.

Be careful with the DRLs, they are a strange type (see below).  They are in the same compartment as the Main beam, but it IS possible to change yourself due to the higher elevation of the bulb and the more simple 'twist-fit' removal method.

The types needed are as follows:

Dipped Beam:  H7
Main Beam:      H1
DRLs:               ABD 7443 21/5  (make sure you ask for white, as most bulbs of this type are RED).

I hope this will save you folks a bit of $$$ as my mistakes have cost me over 50 quid and a couple of hrs of time. :thumbd:
Doubt I'd change the bulbs unless they blew but useful info none the less, fortunately I have access to friendly Maserati specialist who'd let me use their ramps.

Again thanks for the heads up if anything else crops up let us know.

The dipped beam are a bit crap and you will want to chnage them if you do a decent amount of night time driving.

Thanks for the info. I would probably be looking to change the bulbs because if my current 500 is anything to go by then the headlights are pretty crap. Worth knowing the bulb types and the work involved. Cheers  :thumb:

Thanks for the info. I imagine I will upgrade the bulbs so will have to speak to my dealer nicely!!!

Can you clarify what bulbs are in what section. My guess is...

Very bottom - just fog lights
Small light - DRL's and main beam
Big light - Dipped beam and indicators

Does the car actually have sidelights, or is it DRL's?

    Cheers

Yup you have it right Alex_Gregory.

The fog lights are a dealer only job, along with the main beams.

There are no 'sidelights' as such, there isnt even a position for it on the control stalks.  The DRLs are also used as the parking lights.

I changed the main beam bulbs myself today. So you can do it. I got my little trolley jack out, put a bit of wood on it and jacked the car just over the side skirt. Raised the suspension only the wheel was on the ground. Plenty of access and a relatively simple job,.

Indeed, as mentioned earlier if you can jack the car its no problem - seeing as the car doesnt come with a jack and can only be trolley/ramp lifted its not an everyday job for 'normal' users.

I suggest that the first post is edited to state that it is not necessarily a job for a dealer. Even if you own a jack that is not of the trolley type (which cost next to nothing these days I paid 25 Euro for mine and it does the job) the job is possible. As I did not get the wheels to leave the tarmac other solutions like parking one side on a kerb could be enough ground clearance to do the job.

The key was getting enough space in the wheel arch. A forum like this should offer all possibilities and my post is the only one stating that you can do it so your as stated as before comment is not true to the casual viewer of this thread. Stickys are usually from experts and the red highlighting could put potential DIy'ers off.

BTW I am usually the first to go to a garage.

Guys, what's the deal with the upgrade bulbs and them meeting Abarth power and heat ratings. Are they within any tolerances specified? Are there any tolerances specified? ???

My reason for asking is that I would likely be keen to upgrade my lists when I receive my A500 but it I have a concern that the upgrades might infringe the warranty agreement? ???

Edit: To add last 'warranty' paragraph.

Fifth Gear did a piece on changing bulbs on the Renault Megane (i think) and you have to remove the front bumper to get to the Halogen lights!!!! so at least this is easypeasy compared to that AND the price a dealer charged was approx £150 upwards for the privilege!! :'(

Alex did you just change the bulbs to more "powerful" ones? If yes could you let us know which you put in now?
    Thanks

I sure did. The DRL lights are from:

    - These are no longer in production - admin
The low and high beam bulbs are the set at the bottom of this page:

    Hope that helps.

I have the same DRLs as Alex, I think they are the only ones readily available and osram nightbreakers for my others, huge improvement although not much use in summer :)
