Abarth to Abarth engine swap?
« on: April 29, 2020, 02:51:50 pm »
Hi all,

I have 2010 Abarth 135 coming up to 150k! It still pulls like a train and the engine seems strong... but...

I also have a 30k engine from a 2013 Comp which I am breaking... I am sure you can guess where I am going with this! I am not one to believe in 'if it's not broke, don't fix it'.

Now... I have a few questions...

1. From the threads I have read, it looks like the engines just have map differences, so I should be able to install the comp engine and run it on the 135 ECU until I get it mapped. Is this right? Is there a better solution?

2. I am also tempted to steal the xenon headlights, front wishbone and rear beam setup and install on the 135 while I have it bits. The comp has Bilstein suspension! I know I will need to change the loom between the headlights and the BCM... is there anything else I need to consider?

Many thanks in advance for any help/advice you guys have!

Alex

Have you thought about insurance implications?

You may have to change your provider if your present does not accept modifications.

Thankfully this adds a very small surcharge on a yearly basis, so not an issue this time!

I guess I am just wondering if anyone has replaced their Abarth engine before, and what issues they come up against...

As long as I am using the original ECU, BCM etc etc... I think it should be a simple swap of just the engine!

Alex, I would look into whether the 2013 ECU will talk to the electronics of the older car. You might have to get the dealer plug the car in to sort things out.

    Thanks GTMartin -

In my mind I was thinking that the engine itself is universal in Abarth cars of this age, in that the ECU and BCM etc are coded to each other but the engine itself is generic and not coded to anything (it can have any ECU plugged into it, as long as the ECU has a matching BCM etc it will work).

Given that the 135 and the 160 are the same engines physically and the differences are due to the map of each original ECU... I should be able to install and run the 160 engine on the 135 ecu (at 135 power/ 135 map).

Maybe I am wanting this to be more simple that it will turn out to be lol! If any assumptions above are wrong... someone let me know! It will save me!

The easiest way to go about this is probably to swap engine, box and turbo from the comp. On a 2013 it will be the 160 comp if I'm not mistaken, meaning both engines are the same hardware, same IHI turbo, same spec injectors etc.

Rather than going to the hassle of using the 160 ECU, just fit the new engine for freshness, and fit one of our boxes. As you'll see on this link, that will make more power than a 160 through the entire rev range and is a doddle to do in comparison: https://www.bluesparkautomotive.com/projects/abarth-tuning-guide
