Hi guys,

Looking for some advice, I’ve recently bought a 595 142bhp and I’m looking at doing a few mods, but I don’t know where to start!.

I’ve looked at a sports cat, forge induction kit & maybe a bombadrone 2.0. Was looking at getting a TMC box aswell but don’t know how it would work with the mods I’m looking at? Don’t know if I’d be better to do the mods and then get a live map.

If anyone could give me some more info and some suggestions about what order to do them that would be awesome

    Hi,

    As nobody else has replied i will chime in with some of my experience.
    Getting a sports cat will instantly make the car noticeably louder, but will help performance a good deal.

    Forge induction kit i have seen and heard, although its not for me, far too "modified" sounding for me and i would be irritated by the cabin noise but each their own!

    Bombardone i have had one on in the past (albeit with a decat and a large centre resonator) and was still too loud.
    It all depends if you are after performance or aesthetics with the exhaust.

    When i purchased my car 2009 135bhp, it had a decat and a bluespark tuning box, it dyno'd between 159bhp and 163bhp for reference.

    If i had bought a standard car, sports cat would have been first on the list, then judged the sound level to then choose the nicest looking exhaust respectively. Im not sold on any of the induction kits as they all have negatives for me.

    Guess I might as well chime in late too :)

    I'd say avoid the Bomardone - they're not road legal and there's rumors the police are installing noise pollution measuring devices in various places (they already catch the boy racers with v loud exhausts on Southend seafront) so besides potentially earning an MOT fail it might earn you a fine too and a command to replace it, if you're unlucky.

    Go for a Record Monza instead - they're OEM so you can't get into trouble for them and make a v pleasant noise  :thumb:

    Decats are a bit of an interesting one - the govt is planning to tighten up the rules around decats even further, though since it's so hidden on the Abarth it's unlikely to earn an MOT fail unless the car fails on emissions / noise. So prob a nice sports cat / decat would be fine, but stash the original cat somewhere safe in case you need to refit it.

    Induction kits - no idea, but I'd have expected a cold air intake would be quite a good idea since by default the car can draw in warm air from under the bonnet, which must decrease intercooler efficiency.

    Thanks a lot guys. I had no idea the bombadrone was illegal so thanks for that, last thing I’m needing is an MOT fail. I have heard seen lots of people talk about the Monza, but it don’t really like the double twins. I much prefer the two big singles, looks far nicer imo. I want it too look nice and add a bit performance, don’t want it crazy louds and popping & banging like mad upsetting my neighbours.

    I’m not sure about a decat, as no one got back to me until you guys I hunted for days trying to find out the rules etc. Seen alot of mixed opinions so think a sportscat safer and legal option!

    As for the induction kit, it does amp the noise up a bit but I think they actually sound not to bad, helps performance slightly from what I’ve read aswell with the cool air being sucked in.

    I was looking at chips aswell but again l, I’ve read mixed reviews. Some claiming it’s worth it and noticeable & then others the complete opposite. Don’t know if I’d be better to do the work and then get it a rolling map, atleast that way I’d get a dyno results and could actually see what it’s running. With a chip you’ll just never know unless you get it on a rolling road anyways? I fired my reg no. Into a website and said it would go from 142 up to about 170/175? I don’t even know if I would notice that, maybe you guys can help?

    Defo go for a rolling remap over a chip, the chip tuning's generic whereas all cars are a bit different depending on mileage, how they've been driven, modifications, etc so at best you could be losing a few bhp here and there, and at the very worst it could shorten your engine's life through incorrect fueling.

    Chip tuning's a good way to get an instant performance boost and make a bit of money for the company selling the chips, but unless it's a car which cannot be remapped (e.g. early Subaru Imprezas) the tuning chip really is a 'poor man's option' compared with an experienced tuner setting your car up on a rolling road.

    Rolling map it is then, I was sceptical about chips anyways so thinj your spot on pal. Any suggestions with regards to an exhaust? Don’t fancy the Monza & it’s a bit pricey... Although I have seen some going on eBay  for fair enough prices

    Will it fail an MOT if there’s no back box?

    It will if there's no centre silencer either (like on the Abarth) since then you're purely reliant on the cat for noise reduction. And if you're swapping that for a cat delete / sports cat you've then got a straight through exhaust system, which will definitely get a fail except from the most friendly / deaf MOT inspector:

    Sect 8.1.1 from the MOT manual - "Exhaust noise from the vehicle must not be unreasonably above the noise level you’d expect from a similar vehicle with a standard silencer in average condition."

    And from police regs in addition to the above - "In any case the sound emitted by an exhaust fitted to a standard car must not exceed 80dB." That carries a warning, a fixed fine or a car disposal notice for repeat offenders.

    Personally I rather like the Monza (makes the 500 sound like a mini-Alfa V6, which is what attracted me to the Abarth 500 in the first place) but you should be fine with any having a noise output of <80dB (avoid any which don't publish their noise ratings) as long as they're not marked "not for public road use" or "track use only"

    From what I've heard the standard Abarth box makes quite a nice noise with a cat delete anyway though, so maybe try that with the sports cat as a first port of call?

    Shame I can't edit posts, the limit used to be 92dB but has recently been changed to 80dB, which even the standard Abarth exhaust must exceeed!

    As long as the exhaust has type approval for UK roads (aka not one marked as "track / offroad use only") I can't see how on earth the police could enforce an 80dB limit as specified in current regs; that'd make pretty much every Ferrari / Lamborghini ever built illegal, and a vast majority of sports cars would be hovering around that limit.

    From .gov, however note it is for new cars only. According to my MOT man there is no set limit for a car exhaust, however the police may stop you for " causing a nuisance " etc and will quote car type approval test at you. Scare tactics only, but as you know, if they decide to get you they will always find something. Best advice is don't have it loud enough to attract them !!


    Cars and NoiseThe external noise emitted by passenger cars has been controlled since 1929 when the Motor Cars (Excessive Noise) regulations were introduced. New cars are now required to meet Europe-wide noise limits. These have been progressively reduced from 82 decibels (dB (A)) in 1978 to the current limit of 72 dB (A) established in 2016. Information on the level of noise recorded for new models of cars at their type approval test is also listed in the data table.[/size]
    When looking at this information please note that off-road vehicles are allowed to be 1dB (A) louder and wheelchair accessible vehicles or armoured vehicles are allowed to be 2 dB (A) louder.[/font][/size]

    Yeouch, good job by that time most cars will be EVs, I'm sure my other half has shoes that make more noise than that :D

    It's the jump in Nm's (or footpounds in your country) that make you feel the difference. Mine went from 135 - 170Hp and 206 - 300Nm. Ypi'll notice!
