Aftermarket Cold Air Induction
« on: April 16, 2012, 01:15:27 pm »
Maybe someone have raised this question before, but I been looking through the forum in the past 36 hours. . . couldnt find anything.

Just want to ask, you guys know all the aftermarket air induction kits are placing the actual air filter directly on top of the motor. I just want to ask will the factory air box with better panel filter be actual better perform than placing a open pod filter direct on top of the motor that sucks all the hot air in??? ??? I have been looking at options on this but all the aftermarket inductions I found so far are all putting the Air Pod on top, that is the reason stopping me buying it.

What is your thought people?? I just dun want the little turbo sucking all the hot air in. I remember on my last car, I invested big money on getting a Gruppe M CF box with K&N which works awesomely well but I did a search on the product but no luck.

I know what you are looking for.
And it makes sense as the stock air intake is a little strange (taking air, pretty close to the warm turbo... ??? ).

Gruppe M are popular amongst quite a few people in different cars (Hondas and BMW Ms coming into my mind), but do not seem to have anything for the Abarths, presumably just because the production numbers do not add up.

So far, I have only come across an Italian tuner that makes an alternative intake.
Filter will remain on top of the car, but the actual intake is underneath the windscreen (in the plastic bit between it and the bonnet). The build quality of that kit was just so poor that I would not even bother looking into it.

I am thinking to pull the whole stock box off next weekend to see how much room are there for me to play with. Maybe i can work something with the factory box.

A few tuners actually modify the standard airbox, even cars heavily modified >240bhp run on those...
No idea how good that works though.

Surely the BMC OTA is the best bet on paper but didn't get a good response here?

I found the BMC working quite ok for 118kw. I modify the factory box a little last saturday, i cutted the side wall of box out ans mashed it up. Since then i can clearly hear the turbo suction sound, will take the whole box off again this weekend to see if i can run a fresh feed to it as well.

I saw this and we know there running good power, 230 I think? If you look at your own car, to get into the scuttle you need to cut metal near the top plate. Is there any extra strengthening done by them for this?

    Thats awesome :thumb: :thumb:

The simplest fixes are somethings the best, reckon somebody alt to ask Daron (TMC) to see if he can get something like this knocked up in a kit, as there are alot of people that feel the factory airbox looks the best and just needs better cool air feeding to really maximize it potential.

If it came with a Black silicone join most people would asume it was factory anyway :thumb:

I was thinking of taking a feed from down by the driver side IC.  Obviously, its getting cool air and it would be easy to run a wee pipe down there without cutting anything.

If you want one of the after market induction kits you could run a couple of pipes from both lower front ends (near ICs) and places the other end near the cone filter sitting atop of the engine, thus feeding it with a direct supply of cold air.

I have to admit I've been a bit puzzled by the placement of these after market kits, that engine bay gets super hot and I know the air is cooled before it goes into the engine but it still can't be enough given the heat that will be generated in such a compact space!

I think it was proven that the air pressures much higher up near the scuttle compared to the intercoolers, plus less chance of puddle issues  ::)

Love this idea. It should work very well as long as there is a fresh feed

On the Italian Forum ppl had mentioned that this is either 50 or 80 Euro from Romeo Ferraris ...thou I cannot find a link on their website

Cooling and intakes are a HUGE issue on the Italian Forum given the weather - there are some pretty novel solutions being proposed and used.  I do think this is the best by far
