Induction noise hell.

Hi guys

Was wondering if anyone could advise me on a little issue im having.

I recently installed the forge induction kit in my completely standard Abarth 595 Trofeo.

While the noise itself wasn't completely what i expected (it was borderline obnoxious) i got used to it fairly quickly, it was consistent and there was a small but noticable improvement in acceleration performance.

Last week i took the car to have it remapped and was blown away by the increase in performance. The thing is absolutely savage now. I got significant bhp gains and a huge increase in torque. The car actually proper slams you back in the seat now.

Problem is, after the post map honeymoon period was over it suddenly occurred to me how bad the car sounds.

The induction sound is completely over bearing to the point of being offensive. The sucking noise is now far too loud, it drowns out the sound of the engine/exhaust and occasionally it makes grainy/raspy/crackly sounds under hard acceleration almost like its struggling. There is no consistency to it anymore. It just doesn't sound or feel nice.

It amplifies what the turbo unit is doing and there is tons of turbo flutter which while at first was a novelty has become just as annoying as the induction. Some people may like it but i don't want to hear it half a dozen times when im trying to reverse park outside my house.

I realise when the car was remapped both the induction system and the turbo are working differently and the increase in noise was inevitable but i was wondering if you guys could answer a few questions to help me out a bit.

1. Will fitting the forge dump valve (i did buy it but didn't ever fit it) stop the turbo flutter and could it alleviate any of the other suspect noises made by the induction kit? I did do a bit of reading about compression surge and it makes sense but not 100% sure.

2. Is there any way you can muffle the forge unit so it isn't so loud. Would be a shame to rip it out. It looks really nice and it wasn't exactly cheap..

3. If i was to throw the original panel filter back on what are we talking in terms of performance drops? Has anyone done this?

Also be quite intrested to hear if anyone has modded the original airbox.

Would very much appreciate any help or ideas.

    Hello Tony,

    Sorry to hear of your unexpectedly (overly loud noises), it's a bit of a shame when you get in to a situation like that but hey, it happens, we learn and move on.

    I really just wanted to acknowledge your post and pain, and I'm sorry that I can't help you with the answer you are looking for. Although I do understand what each component does, just not how they would interact with eachother in your case as the dump valve is also thrown into the mix.

    I would talk to whoever remapped your car and try to get advice from them about reinstalling the 'very nice' original air filter unit and if you would really need to remap again, as I suspect, and I had this on a motorbike of mine, that it will run richer with the original air filter.

    As you say, those parts are expensive and may turn out to be an expensive lesson. Many have been down this route before, including myself. When I bought my new Turismo a month ago, all I did was the remap, designed for a totally stock car. The air filter and or full exhaust system are really just wallet lighteners and not worth the time or money, but respect for doing it though, I wouldn't do it again in my case.

    Also you will have the added noise of the dump valve, and you actually need to be careful with them as well, as it may upset the air balance in the engine, i.e too rich again.

    Hate to say this, but if it's all too much in the end to sort it all out, revert back a bit and you'll be much happier with only a remap. My Turismo is like you described, serious pull and fun all the way. Don't dig yourself a deeper hole.
