Title: Hi which one is better garrett or the t04
Post by: corsak on August 28, 2021, 10:40:08 am
Hi which is better Garrett 1446 with 240 hp upgrade or the td04 with 240 hp upgrade. Which is easier to assemble and pulls better when driving slowly.

Thanks .

The Garrett 1446 will not make 240hp. The max you will get if you’re lucky is 210hp. It will feel great at low end but runs out of puff at 5200rpm.
If you are modifying your car save yourself some money and go for the TD04 or equivalent, it will only be a matter of time before you do so I would go straight there.

Best.

Tim.

Quick question on this - is the rpm the td04 spools up at much higher than the Garrett or about the same?

From prev experience with the td05 on a different car I know depending on the size of housing / turbine it can make 500-1000 rpm difference to spool times, and though it doesn't sound much you certainly do notice it.

I did a little googling around various power curves, and it looks like the Garrett spools about 250 rpm sooner and reaches 100 bhp about 250 rpm sooner too, so not a huge difference. However there do seem to be a few people classing them as laggy, maybe that's compared with the IHI?

No idea experience-wise, but looks like the TD04 is quite a good bet to me...

Best way to keep spoolup time low would be to have a free-flowing decatted exhaust since this allows the exhaust gases to exit quicker. Whether it's worth increasing the diameter of the exhaust manifold / header depends on the application - larger diameter won't restrict flow at high rpm, but the increased diameter reduces the speed the exhaust gases are travelling at, which makes spoolup slower.

Darn, wish I could work out how to edit a post, it'd save me from creating a stream of newbie waffle on here.

Note - the TD04 spoolup time (i.e. lag) and performance will be very dependent on what sort of TD04 you use - they're not all the same. Exhaust housing and turbine wheel / compressor wheel will all have a bearing on max boost and spoolup, as will choosing a hybrid (ball bearing) CHRA in place of the standard sleeved bearing.

Also you have to bear in mind the stock engine internals will only be able to stand a finite amount of boost, so if you choose a turbo which e.g. could go all the way up to 300bhp, you may well find you actually get 0 bhp since the massively increased boost will wreck a standard engine.

And finally you have to look at the insurance implications, whilst a standard gt1446 might only result in a small premium increase since it's a factory fitted turbo, fitting an aftermarket one might make your insurers see £££ signs...
