    yes

so what else are you changing apart from the turbo to get 250

    you need
    different boost sensors
    new injectors
    big inter cooler
    new exhaust
    and a good induction kit

and how much boost are you going to run

its only better to run a bigger turbo significantly under its potential when you're tracking the car as you'll benefit from lower boost and therefore lower temperatures helping efficiency and reliability while also being able to keep the revs up and the turbo spooled - on the road however the bigger turbo will mean increased lag and a higher boost threshold - dont confuse those 2 terms - either build the engine so you can make the most of the bigger turbo or run a smaller  turbo nearer its maximum potential - allowing better response/lower boost threshold - the increased heat generated from running a turbo nearer its maximum is an acceptable tradeoff as what isnt used in huge amounts on the road especially at that power level. -

Dan - unless your engine has forged/strengthened internals or is running methanol 250hp on standard pistons will melt something especially once the weather begins to get warmer

it actually works then does it - it must have been on its holidays for a considerable amount of time judging by some of the efforts of forum members :p - but yes i assumed as much, i just wanted to make sure what i typed could be understood

mine is running 1.5 bar of boost  the standard internals are safe up to 1.6 bar

with the forged piston and rods and cams it can be turned up to 1.8 bar safely

so that should be close to 300hp

if that is more than the car can handle i can turn it down  to maybe 1.65bar and run it safe

as for how it drives on the road it is far better than when it had the ihi turbo

with the ihi turbo i got 242ftlb at to low a rpm for the car to put down  now it only makes 240ftlb but it makes it at higher revs and the car is better for it

as it builds power smoothly all the way to the red line

insted of making all the power by 4000rpm and then running out of puff

so in conclusion for me the bigger turbo is perfect  you can drive it round town like its a 1.4 non turbo and when you having fun and use all the revs it is just as fast as a astra vxr

i mean come on the ihi has a power band from 2000 to 4000rpm  when you a driving fast how often are you that far down the rpm range

my turbo starts to spool at 2800rpm and makes full boost by 3400 and makes it all the way to the red line

it is perfect for on the motor way all i have to do is scweeze  the throttle and boost builds and  you get pushed back in to you seat

and  my 7.5l inter cooler will help keep things cool

i perhaps wasnt making myself clear Dan - when i was talking about running a smaller turbo hard as opposed to a bigger turbo within itself i was referring to the OP's turbo - he said the IHI was rated for 300 hp and he would be running it at 250hp - i was saying that instead of getting a turbo rated for 300 and running it at 250 get a turbo like yours rated for 260 and run it at 250 - you will still achieve target power with a turbo that wil be more responsive - i wasn't comparing your turbo to the stock IHI - which is good for pottering around on the road but when the pace is upped it is found wanting -

I assume the turbo TMC fittied for you is GTT's one? - if it is you wont get 300 hp - lagerlout os barely achieving that with a GT25/28 hybrid and a host of other modifications - instead of building the engine i would just fit GTT's powermist kit run a bit more boost and you'll have pretty much the optimum balance between performance/reliability/drivability/cost

I haven't just changed the turbo and i did look at the GT20/25 conversion but the turbo which i got built for me i have been told its better than that and with no Lag its just IHI 5 housing with different parts 360 ball bearings and some other parts i dont quite understand lol, Also iv got a Larger Front mounted Intercooler, Induction Kit is the Sanspeed one but Customised to draw the cold in from where the old intercoolers were, Exhaust staying the same but Decat, Uprated Drive Shaft, Uprated Clutch And the old Boost gauge taken out and Changed for a different one but in the same housing, As for bigger injectors iv told i dont need them and Same for Map sensors But its already been map by angel on the old set up and is going into AMD for two days when i get it back sometime next week to be set up again seeing as they have the rolling road and offered the best price :) and iv been told all that will make me 250 bhp and then in the summer if i still got the car i was looking at forged pistons and Nos kit just for some more fun

maybe also consider relocating the battery with a small Dry Cell under the seat. Since you dun have those stock intercooler there, when you lose the battery, you can actually draw cold air from where the intercooler was into the induction. That's what I am doing with the BMC OTA
