What a difference! (Bump stops)
« on: October 07, 2013, 03:43:14 pm »
Had Fiat Coupe bump stops fitted to the rear of my standard A500 this morning and all I can say is wow!

Without trying to over-egg the pudding, and being fully aware that subconsciously I know something is different, my usual bumpy, jiggly daily ride to the gym today has been transformed.

The back of the car now sticks to the road rather than bouncing about over anything bigger than a fag paper, and feels much more settled generally. Not once in the 8 mile trip did I hear the awful BANG! BANG! that we're all used to on the standard stops.

I can actually feel the suspension working in the rear now. Don't get me wrong it's still a very firm ride, but you hear rather than feel the very worst potholes that would have caused the horrendous noise before.

Its next major test will be when I visit my girlfriend in the week where the roads are more like the surface of the moon than a public highway and then her reaction to being driven in it with the bump stops changed. She hated it before.

So impressed am I, that Koni FSD upgrade has dropped off the 'to do' list for the time being. I can live with the ride as it is now. You can see the extra amount of suspension travel they give in the pics below - the yellow one being the Coupe's.

I'll post further updates over the next couple of weeks to see if I'm still impressed or if the novelty has worn off.

ALL A500s should come out of the factory like this -  a £50 upgrade that makes a world of difference.

Apologies for another thread on this topic, but I thought it warranted one given the results.

I have a ever growing collection of parts, including these.  Just waiting for my rear pads and then it's off for a service to get the bump stops done.  How much labour time was it for the bump stops?

How much labour time was it for the bump stops?

I had the common squeaking rear brakes issue on mine and that was the main reason it was in. Once they'd taken them apart to grease and clean them, they found it also needed new rear pads - so I let them do that as well as fitting the new bump stops.

All in all it they charged me an hour's labour + VAT - £60 which given the improvement is a bargain!!

Wasn't counting on the £30 cost for pads, but hey, if they were due doing best they were done while the brakes were already in pieces eh? Talking of which, are now silent which is a joy!

    Do it!

£47 for the stops and about an hour's labour to fit them. You should be looking at £100 all in. Been out tonight on some really rough roads, had the odd BANG! BANG! but SO much less jiggling, bouncing and the back hopping about all over the place.

I'm really pleased with the result. It's never going to be Rolls Royce smooth, but this tiny mod is a huge improvement. If you have an EsseEsse/Lowered car you'll REALLY notice the difference  :thumb:

Is anyone running Coupe bump stops with Konis? I've only ever known my Esseesse with Konis, so I can't comment on the ride without them but I'm wondering if the bump stops would improve the ride even further?

Cost saving at a guess, which is ridiculous given the RRP to us peasants is only £17 per side. The Konis should be standard kit too!!

Thanks Tropper. I'm assuming ebay or my local Fiat dealer is the best place to buy them?

Ok so visited the GF for the first time since having it done (much to her disgust) and the road that would normally result in a trip to the osteopath was considerably less awful with the new bump stops, as was the level crossing on the way there.

I can't recommend this mod highly enough - it's £50, why wouldn't you do it for the improvement?
