1 Week and 1200 miles in the 500 - and.......
« on: January 07, 2009, 09:08:02 pm »
....... Its great! 8)

No seriously.... I have put 1200 miles on her now (and will put another 600 on tomorrow) - about 800 miles on the highway and 400 on small roads and the smile factor is just huge.

Yesterday and today I have been able to use the full rev range for the first time (I dared to take it to the point where the 'shift up' flashes today) and the car absolutely loves the revs.  Its a real gem and has soo much torque that you dont even have to be that careful about what gear you are in.  I have taken her to 200kph and it feels safe and stable at all speeds.

In line with what the magazines have said, the chassis lets you know exactly what each corner of the car is doing and allows you to place the car precisely and confidently on the road.  The brakes are bedded in and strong and full of feel.  The suspension (on smooth roads) is great, but more on that later.

The interior is a lovely place to be, the seats are supportive and when playing around last night on the eurotunnel I found that even at 6 foot 2 I can fit in the chair behind the drivers seat (at a push!)  The POD (rev and speedo) took me a while to get used to, but its easy to use when its familiar.  The Interscope HiFi is nothing short of fantastic  - a really genuinely good system.

The boot is a useful shape and swallowed 3 soft bags and a suit case without problem (what more can you ask of a car this size?)

Its alreading drawing a lot of attention from other drivers and against my expectations it seems that a lot of people actually know what it is, the flip side being that all the boy racers want to have a try.

Bad points (and im afraid of course there are some).

Sport mode, or should I say 'non sport' mode.  I dont understand why the Abarth has a sport button, it should be in sport mode all the time - and thats not because of the increased HP and torque, its because the steering in standard mode is pretty awful.  Evo magazine got it right when they described it as being 'controlled by magnets' ; snappy and devoid of feel - thankfully sport mode cures it (PHEW!)

Suspension - Its a short wheel base car with stiff suspension so you cant complain too much, but every now and again the suspension seems to pick up an oscillation with the imperfections in the road (im talking motorway speeds) which means it begins to bump and crash and just gets worse and worse until you pass that piece of tarmac or adjust the speed significantly.  It can be reasonably disconcerting the first couple times it happens, but you get used to it.

I do feel like the car could do with a 6th gear for the motorway.

Theres no glove box!

The 35L tank is ridiculously small and when you give it some beans it returns average 25mpg, this means around 200 miles to the tank, which means I have filled it up 5 times in 3 days!

The wheels are very very easy to kerb :(

The windscreen wipers are awful, juddering and smearing dirt around - although they are showing slight signs of getting better.

Due to aerodynamic effect the passenger mirror glass seems to instantly pick up dirt when the road is wet, making it almost impossible to use.

The blue and me is quite tempremental and the voice recognition is poor/terrible.

Having said that dont worry too much, they dont detract from the car too much.  At the end of the day the smile factor is huge - this is a genuinely fast, small car that seems to be surprising people every where I go (so much so that when they see a 500 in the mirror they tend to not get out of the way!)  The pick up at any speed and in any gear has genuinely shocked me.  The feel good factor this little car gives out is priceless and I imagine hard to replicate at any price level.

10/10 :thumb:

(hopefully this was useful for some of you prospective owners, I will keep this updated as the miles go on, as I expect to do about 20k a year in the Abarth.)

Good review! Nice to know what to expect. The wipers seem to be an inherent 500 problem. I just don't use them on my 500 sport! I was wondering about the fuel tank as I find myself filling mine up quite often so I imagine the problem escalates with a turbo added into the mix...

Sounds like you're having a ball though! Glad you're enjoying it - I can't wait!

With regard to the wipers, mine have improved considerably within the last 1000 miles or so (now on 6000ish). Stopped making the horrific farting noise anyway!

Glad you are enjoying it Euroboy.
The problem that you are having with Blue + Me is probably more down to your phone than the system. The Sony ericsons seems to work great and some of the Nokias are OK but most other things are pretty poor.

I have it paird with a SE K850i and a 3g Iphone and the problems are the same with both.   I have an Alfa with the same system so I am well used to its shortfalls... tbh as a piece of hardware I think B&M is pretty poor.

I dont know about the K850i but the I phone will do nothing but pair with the car. Buy yourself an old SE 850I to use with the car and it will do everything including reading out your text messages. I regret getting rid of mine, the LG Viewty is CR*P! :thumbd:

I have a K850i connected to my B&M and it works perfectly. I don't bother with the voice controls however...  ::)

unfortunatly my phone isnt compatable with the message reader but thats SUCH a good function if you have the correct phone!

just a quick one for mainly the dealers (they might know better) my old mjet didnt have the message reader function.... did the blue and me program change for the S1 GP to the S2 GP?

haha i find the message reader hysterical! My mate kept sending me texts just to hear the woman in the dash even attempt to pronounce pretty much anything he wrote (mainly expletives)  ;D

Thanks for the review euroboy, nicely balanced. Only thing you said that faintly worries me is the passenger mirror getting dirty quickly that's a new one. I  don't doubt the steering in non sport mode is really weird, my other half's Panda feels really odd and toyish but after hulking around in the 159 it's like getting in a dodgem (without the bumps).

Nothing you said in the negatives has put me off, and the postives just make me want one more.

Im-Mia, The message reader is available to download from the Fiat website. Pop it onto a USB stick and put into the car and it automatically updates.
