16" wheels on Esseesse
« on: October 19, 2011, 10:10:51 am »
Hi !

I am planning on fitting the 16" wheels back on our SS over the winter (with winter tyres)

Is this a problem with the SS springs ?

The 195/45/16s are (apparently !) 582mm diameter whereas the 205/40/17s are 596mm.

I assume therefore that the ride height will be dropped by 7mm (half the difference in diameters) but that otherwise I should be OK ?

Your thoughts would be appreciated !

Cheers

Garreth

It will be absolutely fine.  :thumb:

I'm fitting 16"s to mine with winter tyres, and it's lower than an SS.

I bet the car rides a lot better on 16's. I just love the look of the 17's on the little car ;D The tram lining can get somewhat annoying though sometimes.

I've had 16"s on mine for a week now, but am still running the suspension on it's track setting. TBH I think they look really good, and the ride is better. They also don't look quite as lost as they would normally, becasue mine's quite low; could do with spacing out a bit though. I did, however, get stranded on top of a speed bump in the hellhole that is Darwen yesterday; the strutbrace is perilously close to the ground. Despite the 16"s having a larger profile tyre, the overall circumference must be smaller.

I promise you, it does not. I'll use them for winter tyres but that is it.  Otherwise, they can stay in the shed. Mind you, mine is an SS/konis.

What I will say, although the ride is more comfortable, the handling is sh*t. This is probably the tyres, but there's obviously more body roll with the 16". Like SJH says - winter use only.

I got my esseesse fitted with the standard wheels first so I could wax the esseesse wheels. When changing over I noticed no difference at all to be honest with regards to ride and handling. Still a bit hard but not uncomfortable. My friend has just bought an import 1999 Nissan Skyline and whilst it's a lovely car it's the first one I've been in where the suspension is so hard it is very uncomfortable after minutes
