Then you can't possibly say if the insurance is too dear, can you.

Err, yes I can. The lack of security devices has placed this car in an insurance group higher than expected.

My GPA costs me £200-odd to insure, without an alarm, and that's two groups higher.  I don't think that's dear at all.

I don't understand the "higher than expected" statement.  I don't remember seeing any predictions - in fact, it's lower than I expected.

And ease up on the attitude.  (Edit: Please)  :)

Err, no they are not! S Works is circa 200 bhp and over £20K to buy in England. Insurance is too dear, obviously Fiat haven't thought about running costs too closely.

I know it doesnt relate to the UK directly, but my policy on the Abarth here in Holland (3rd party) was 500 Euro.

For full option cover (including a new car if wrecked within 3 yrs) was 1300 EUR.

That makes it almost exactly the same price as a Mini Cooper S JCW, which in my mind is reasonable as they are a similar sort of car.

FIrst chill out a little bit,  we dont need the attitude on here.

You have several OWNERS of these cars telling you that the insurance is reasonable and is similar to cars that are in direct competition with the Abarth.  As you admit yourself you havent even received a quote for buying one yet, never mind the insurance policy, so please take on baord the advice that is being given to you by people who have direct experience.

If you think the price is too high, then dont buy one.  They may be 'small' cars but I certainly dont think they will be cheap to run; im sure Abarth will survive without your business.  The price is what it is, clearly Fiat/Abarth are happy with it and think it will not be a problem to the vast majority of its target buyers.

My adivce would be either take it or leave it, but dont give sh*t to people who have taken the time out of their day to give you their direct experience.

I can understand where shep76s is coming from - Abarth were quoted, i'm sure, to have said that they (or atleast they were thought to) aim their vehicles at a younger market? Correct me if i'm wrong.

I'm 20 years old, so other poeple on here may be arguing over a couple of hundred of quid, but with me it runs into triple figures. I'm a bloody safe driver and currently drive a 500 1.4 sport - group 5 insurance, which still costs about 900 a  year. Maybe i could get that down...

I've attained quotes on a GPA however, just to give me some perspective and the results i'm getting are insane! 5 grand almost! For a car that has 35hp more than my current one (despite the obvious desirabiltiy of an abarth) i still find group 13  pretty high. For a company who are trying to aim their cars at a younger market, I feel they are failing drastically by allowing the car to be pretty much impossible to insure unless your over 30, living in the heart of the country, working as a doctor and with your car stored in an underground garage policed 24/7 by special forces officers...

How hard would it have been to fit a f***ing alarm?

How does 35 extra bhp justify an insurance group jump from 5 to 13?

It's a shame because it seems like for a a lot of people on here an Abarth is a second or even third car but for me it's pretty much a dream car. I'd love one, but just hope i can get a sensible quote otherwise it just won't be worth it...   :(

Your beef is with the insurance companies, Joe.

Have you tried getting a quote for a GPA *with* an alarm?  My suspicion is that it won't be much different.

tried with thatcham cat 1, no change. maybe i was a little naive to suspect the grouping wouldn;t be so different from the 1.4 sport.

the renaultsport twingo 133 is only group 8...

    i dunno. i'm confused  :(

I do sympathise Joe. I can't help but feel that insurance companies have got their pricing horribly wrong when it comes to younger drivers.
To my mind, giving them affordable premiums but carrying massive excesses would ensure that they could afford to insure their vehicle but also make the less responsible more responsible by thinking of the consequences of their actions.
For what it's worth, when I put my deposit on to the 500 I did a quick insurance check and bizarrely enough, I can insure a 993 Porsche 911 for less than an AGP  ???

Easy answer to your predicament Joe, wait a couple of years, enjoy your 1.4 sport, build up your NCB, save some money and bag yourself an Abarth for £6-8K? I know that the wait will hurt, but I'm sure you would also get more satisfaction doing it this way and you wouldn't loose a shed load on depreciation and insurance bills.

Group 13 is about what I would expect.

Insurance companies won't base it on BHP alone (if comparing to the 500 1.4 Sport for exmaple), it will be on a number of factors like the sportyness of the 'Abarth name tag', bigger wheels, bodykit etc, basically any excuse for them to up the cost of insurance!

I don't think group 13 is bad at all same as a fiesta st and they don't seem to have problem shifting them to young drivers. But I can understand why insurance company's pick on young drivers. They are a risk and it is there way of controlling what you drive. I wouldn't want to risk my money on a 20 year old in a pocket rocket. Not aiming it at you joe personally but young drivers do not help themselves at all.

i did alex, it came to just under 2 grand. i'd be prepared to pay that for a 500 abarth. I just can't understand, despite the lack of alarm, how a 500 abarth is group 13 and a twingo 133 is group 8?

the thing that's most annoying about all this is that i can't get a solid quote to suggest whether i can afford to insure one or not, and until then i can't place an order (unless i want to lose 500 quid)! It's so frustrating!  >:(

With regard to waiting a a few years, and the fact that i'm 20, you might all be right, I do love my 500 but I bought a demonstartor annoyingly (was desperate to have a 500!) and didn't give myself chance to think it through and spec my own options. Just want something with a bit more grunt! It's a shame though because i'm sure there are people much older than me who are much higher risks on the road. It's a bitch.

I more than agree with the idea of higer excesses an lower premiums. I think it would deter people from being idiots and would allow the sensible ones  to insure their motors.

Just as an eample (and I dont know if its correct) you may well find that the Abarth uses far more bespoke bodywork that is unique to the Abarth, whereas the Twingo uses regular panels... this would increase the repair costs significantly.

The fact of the matter is that the alarm will hardly change the insurance premium at all (max. 1-200 pounds on a 2k quote), the immobiliser is what stops the crooks these days.

It is high insurance because its built in low numbers, powerful, attractive to thieves and uses a lot unique parts.  This is reality :(  Either bite the bullet or wait a couple of years and run something cheaper for now, its what the rest of us had to do.
