Title: 500 Abarth - Performance Figures

Translated an article from a German site, but have also seen this mentioned previously in a few places about how Abarths in general are putting out more power than the official Abarth figures suggest.
In the case of the 500 Abarth, rolling road figures are showing upto 10% more power as standard with no modifications.
Without Sport mode: 144 HP/197 Nm With Sport mode: 148.5 HP/237 Nm

I read the same article on the fiat500blog.de. It seems like the power on the wheels with the Sport boost on was 113.9 PS and they calculated the transmission losses to be 30.4 %. Here is the dyno curve from that measurement:
It seems like they dynoed the car on the G-Tech dyno and they also had a G-Tech tuned GPA on the dyno. It produced 200 PS on the wheels and they calculated it to be 261 PS from the engine.

Black wheels=yuck. Always thought it made cars just look like the wheel trims had came off at some point.
It doesn't make sense for the car maker to underestimate the power of the car. Wouldn't you want to make it look as powerful as possible :S.

I believe they tend to put the lowest average figure just to stop anyone dynoing it and then sueing if there is less power, apparently something that happened in the states. Although the figures tend not to be at the wheels which seems odd to me.
Quite like the black wheels though.

Dyno figures should always be taken with a pinch of salt. Lots of factors affect the results they seem to give.

I had never heard of people suing, that seems pretty ridiculous. So basically it's just a safety net type thing.

It's true Ryan. A well known automotive company in the US was sued because a customer's muscle car made nothing like the performance figures quoted. From that point on, manufacturers were very careful to quote exactly how their performance figures were certified - for instance what fuel RON was used.
In this instance air temp and humidity will have an effect because most manufacturers are required to certify at 25c. Those 10 degrees and 44% humidity will increase power by some way due to much denser air and it also depends on the correction factor which is driven by temp and baro pressure. I don't speak german but it doesn't look to me like there is one applied here.
Oh, and PS is not a straight conversion to HP. To get HP, multiply kW by 1.341
For info, no manufacturer would likely underquote performance figures but there is a thing called C.O.P which means conformance of production: basically any engine made should be within 5% of the certified performance figures.
