Title: Abarth 595 Competizione Engine Cut Out (Brand New Car)
Post by: Brightonlad1 on September 26, 2020, 03:43:20 pm
Hi All

My name is Steve and I’m new to the forum.
I live in brighton and have wanted a 595 Comp for over a year.
I saw a pre reg one for sale with only 21 miles on it.
The car was located in Hull.
I know that’s a long way away from brighton but it was a really good price so I went with my wife for a weekend and picked up the car.
That’s when the trouble started.
About 250 miles done I hit a traffic jam on the M23,only about 30 miles from home.
It was 30 degrees c outside.
While sitting in traffic for roughly 15mins the car started to idle badly,to the point the car was shaking.
There was a surging noise from under the car.
Then the car just turned itself off.
I restarted the car.
Still sitting in traffic about 1 min later the same thing.
For the new 45 mins of so I had to keep turning the car off and on with the movement of traffic.
Eventually the traffic cleared and I drove the car home without any problems.
When I got on I drove it on to the driveway where I left it idling.
The engine would start to cut out and then recover.
No warning lights whatsoever.
The next day it was cool weather so I left it idling on the drive for a good 20mins and it was running fine.
I booked it in to my local dealer.
It went in last Wednesday.
They came back to me and said no fault could be found,no fault codes.
I have used the car a few times and no sign of the fault.
No one can explain it.
The problem is now I’m worried about taking it on long journeys just incase it brakes down again.
Has anyone had anything similar or any ideas what it could be.
Thanks in advance.
Cheers steve

Welcome to the forum Steve, not a very good start to your Abarth ownership

Was the car overheating on the temp gauge?

Were you running short on fuel?

Have you checked the water and oil levels?

Hi 124Abarthreplica

The temperature was normal.

Water and oil levels all good.

Had 1/4 tank of fuel.

The car was registered on the 28th feb.

Jordan’s of hull had it as a demonstrator but never used.

So it’s a 69 plate and had 21 miles on it when I picked it up.

The only thing I can think of is the fuel tank had 1/2 tank in it.

Do you think the petrol could of been bad sitting around for 7 months.

I said this to my local dealer when it went in last Wednesday but they said it would if flagged up as a fault code.

Any ideas?

Certainly stale petrol will affect running, maybe a little water in with the petrol.

All I can suggest is informing the selling dealer of your situation and refill with fresh fuel and monitor the situation.

Try not to worry too much as they are extremely reliable cars. :thumb:

Have you checked/replaced the battery? A worn battery can cause all sorts of strange things. These small batteries don't last very long. And this being a car that probably stood still a lot...

My first thought was bad fuel.

Luckily its a tiny tank and should flush through quickly.

As FLP says, keep an eye for odd electrical things, sure sign of battery issues.

I hope its the last of the problem, a 595 is just about the best smiles per mile car there is 8)

Thanks for all the messages.
I spoke to Jordons of Hull today about the possibility of the fuel gone bad.
Their reply was the fuel was put in 3 days before I picked up the car so it couldn't of been that.
Maybe they are just saying that as they don't want to admit to it, who knows.
Any other suggestions?

Very odd.

Mine was registered around the same time and done multiple long drives including a North Wales road trip (~1000 miles in 3 days) never had an issue at all.

Again reading your first post I'd say fuel but you have ruled that out...I guess just see how it goes, you can always take it to any Abarth dealer for warranty related issues.

Monza Sport in Ashington are a full on Abarth Service Centre. Not a dealer, just an official Abarth service centre pretty sure they do warranty work. They’re also an Alpha place so have more experience on the T-jet engine than Fiat dealerships. Not far away from you either. Worth considering if it happens again.

Had 2 abarths from jordans hull my dealings with them have been great. I purchased my last one just as lockdown started so could not  collect until weeks after. On my drive home to cheshire when i floored it there was i big lag in power which concerned me. After a couple of tanks of fuel this has now cleared i put mine down to car standing. I also had failed battery on my previous abarth which did some strange things.
