Abarth 595 Competizione Sabelt Seats Attractive to Thieves
« on: December 18, 2014, 09:16:06 pm »
Some enterprising individuals made off with the front seats from my 595 Competizione a short while ago.

According to a witness it took them very little time to unbolt them and get them out of the car.

This little charade caused my 1 year old barely driven car to be written off. Replacing the seats was going to cost me over 11K GBP.

If you are the lucky owner of a 595 Competizione I would strongly suggest 1. Getting a car alarm (not fitted as standard on the 595) 2. changing the bolts that connect the seat to the chassis and 3. Take up the offer of GAP insurance.

Ho hum...

So these "witnesses" watched them break into your car unbolt the 4 or so bolts holding each seat down, unplug the sensors and remove the seats and they did nothing??

    How do they come out?

I know on mk2 clios when a few had the recaros stolen it was because they bolted in from underneath so they unbolted them, smashed the window and dragged them out.

Sucks that you can't have anything nice these days.

I assume the 11k replacement was because they damaged other stuff at the time?

Is this is a genuine post? I really can't understand how they could write off your car for the cost of the seats, makes no sense to me,  if I have missed something i'm sorry, hate to hear of anyone having anything stolen or damaged on their car.

That's  A real shame, really sad when scum see something nice and think they can take it, but the price can't be right. That means I recently purchased a pair of seats and got a whole nearly new car for a 5k

    Yep. It happened.

By the time the witness understood what was going on and got to a phone they had got the seats out and into a car that showed up. The guy had probably been sitting in mine for a while undoing various bits and pieces. He caught the thieves number plate so there may be some follow up.

It's 11K of repair costs because through a dealer they buy the seats in 101 minuscule parts and apparently it takes 2.5 hours per seat to build and fit them.

So far it's considered a t Cat D write off because the costs of repair exceed 70% of the car's value (as decided) by the insurance company. Bought the car for 16500 prereg Sept 2013, and now according to them with just 6000 miles it's worth much less. Of course I'll challenge this but still, it's a tedious process to go through.

My question is why Abarth wouldn't fit an alarm as standard and they don't use locking nuts on the seats as they do on the alloy wheels. Maybe if enough seats get stolen they will. The really odd thing is that, to keep things light, they don't even plan to do this on the 32+K Biposto.

How many times have you heard an alarm go off and thought it was just another false alarm?

    Ah yes, fair point.

I will however be getting the baddest alarm I can find as soon as this little matter is resolved. ;)

no, that's the problem, they order them in a gazillion different parts and assemble them...In theory it takes 2.5 hours per seat to make up and install.

Someone very helpfully suggested Platts, and TMC - they sound like a much smarter route as they seem to supply them whole.
